Selectees typical work assignments may include the following:
  • Serve as a Computer Engineer and acts independently to uncover and resolve issues.
  • Plan, research and develop IT solutions and recommend technological applications programs.
  • Serve as Laison between the FRSC Branch, building occupants, other public and private entities and or contractors on matter pertaining to repair and maintenance projects.
  • Design, research and develop highly advance utility application
  • Provide expertise to develop plans, address current systems and needs and meet long range requirements

Basic Requirement for Engineers

The Engineering occupation has specific educational requirements which apply to all positions. Transcripts are required at the time of application.

An Engineering degree from a program that: (1) lead to a bachelor's degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering Technology (ABET); or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced that first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.

OR

A combination of college-level education, training and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. The adequacy of such background was obtained by a Professional registration or licensure - Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineers in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (E) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico.

OR

A combination of college-level education, training and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. The adequacy of such background was obtained by a Written Test - Evidence of having successfully passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination or any other written test required for a professional registration by an engineer licensure board in the various States, District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico.

OR

A combination of college-level education, training and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. The adequacy of such background was obtained by successful completion of 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and that included the courses specified in the basic requirements under item A above.

A combination of college-level education, training and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. The adequacy of such background was obtained by successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific field, e.g., engineering technology, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology, may be accepted in lieu of a bachelor's degree in engineering, provided the you have had at least 1 year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance.

You may qualify at the GS 12 level, if you fulfill the following qualification requirement:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS 11 grade level in the Federal service (experience may have been gained in the private sector) that demonstrates your ability in providing technical engineering systems support to life safety power, standby power, mission critical power and mission critical chilled water systems to identify, analyze and implement solutions to resolve complex or unique problems.

You may qualify at the GS 11 level, if you fulfill the following qualification requirement:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS 9 grade level in the Federal service (experience may have been gained in the private sector) that demonstrates your ability in: demonstrated experience in application and software engineering for Utility Human Interface (HMI) Supervisory Control and Data Acquistion (SCADA) Building or Industrial Controls Automation applications of Facility Operations Data Analyst. Analyze, configure, test and troubleshoot all aspects of computer engineering systems, control systems, automation systems and software engineering applications.

OR

Must possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., if related.

OR

A combination of education and specialized experience as described above, but less than one year; and at least one year of graduate education as described above, but less than the required two years. The computed percentage of the requirements MUST total at least 100% (To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then, divide your semester hours of graduate education beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.). (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

You may qualify at the GS 9 level, if you fulfill the following qualification requirement:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS 7 grade level in the Federal service (experience may have been gained in the private sector) that demonstrates your ability in: demonstrated experience in application and software engineering for Utility Human Machine Interface (HMI)/Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), Building or Industrial Controls Automation applications or Facility Operations Data Analysis. Utilize engineering theories, principles, concepts, standards and methods pertinent to highly complex life safety power, standby power, and mission critical power.

OR

A master's or equivalent graduate degree OR 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree OR LL.B. or J.D., if related.

OR

A combination of specialized experience as described above, but less than one year; and at least one year of graduate education as described above, but less than the required two years. The computed percentage of the requirements met MUST total at least 100% (To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then, divide your semester hours of graduate education beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS 5 grade level in the Federal service (experience may have been gained in the private sector) that demonstrates your ability in: : demonstrated experience in application and software engineering for Utility Human Machine Interface (HMI)/Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) , Building or Industrial Controls Automation applications or Facility Operations Data Analysis.

OR

One full year of graduate level education which demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position, OR successfully completed all the requirements for a bachelor's degree and am claiming Superior Academic Achievement. In order to be creditable under this provision, Superior Academic Achievement must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled, such as that identified in B above. Superior Academic Achievement is based on: (1) Class Standing - You must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses; OR (2) Grade-Point Average (G.P.A.) - You must have a grade-point average of either (a) 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on your official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or (b) 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.; OR (3) Honor Society Membership - You may be considered eligible based on membership in one of the approved national scholastic honor societies listed by the Association of College Honor Societies (https://www.achsnatl.org/ ).
