Overview

The Work:

The Learning Center Specialist is responsible for supporting English as a Second/Foreign Language (ESL/EFL) and English for Specific Purposes (ESP) programs at Sheppard AFB by providing technical expertise, instructional support, and program management. This role includes facilitating student access to multimedia learning resources, maintaining instructional equipment, and delivering individual assistance to students when needed. The Learning Center Specialist ensures the Learning Resource Center (LRC) operates effectively, sustaining a high-quality learning environment to help students achieve optimal English proficiency.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

The Learning Center Specialist will:
  • Apply professional knowledge of ESL/EFL principles, approaches, and methodologies to facilitate effective language instruction.
  • Utilize expertise in English grammar, phonology, and linguistic functions to assist students and improve language learning outcomes.
  • Leverage mastery of ESL/EFL/ESP pedagogy and program management principles to implement educational strategies.
  • Conduct assessments and apply ESL/EFL test/measurement principles to evaluate student progress and program effectiveness.
  • Provide context-based learning by demonstrating knowledge of American culture and its relationship to the English language.
  • Design and develop instructional materials in accordance with established principles for material creation.
  • Operate multimedia equipment, such as microcomputers, printers, video players/recorders, CD-ROMs, and audio/CD players, to ensure smooth resource accessibility.
  • Provide orientation, training, and hands-on assistance to students encountering challenges with multimedia equipment to enhance learning engagement.
  • Produce administrative documents, including statistical data and operational reports, to support program management and compliance.
  • Perform routine maintenance, such as connecting cables and powering on equipment, to keep LRC items functional.
  • Manage media labs and all equipment and software related to them; manage teacher schedule daily to track student and teacher use of the labs.
  • Manage students in the Phase-1 SLT program and ensure they are actively engaged in language learning.
  • Create and maintain Google documents to automate lab scheduling and attendance.
  • Report major equipment issues to the appropriate technical staff for troubleshooting and resolution.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Qualifications - Here's What You Need:
  • Professional Expertise: Proficient knowledge of ESL/EFL/ESP principles, methodologies, and program management.
  • Language Skills: Advanced understanding of English grammar, phonology, linguistic functions, and American cultural nuances.
  • Assessment Techniques: Competence in applying ESL/EFL test/measurement principles to evaluate language progress.
  • Technical Skills: Demonstrated ability to operate multimedia equipment and perform basic troubleshooting, such as uploading software and maintaining minor hardware functionality.
  • Administrative Skills: Strong ability to create reports, manage data, and support administrative requirements in a Learning Center environment.
  • Must be able to pass a background check. May require additional background checks as required by projects and/or clients at any time during employment.

  • Interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate in a clear, professional, and articulate manner.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills with high-level attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to multitask and prioritize in a fast past environment with changing priorities; adaptable to change and a quick learner.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work well independently as well as on a multi-functional team.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately
  • Proficient in MS Office, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel.

Working Conditions:
  • Professional office environment.
  • Ability to work on-site Sheppard Air Force Base, Wichita Falls, Texas.
  • Must be physically and mentally able to perform duties extended periods of time.
  • Ability to use a computer and other office productivity tools with sufficient speed to meet the demands of this position.
  • Must be able to establish a productive and professional workspace.
  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time looking at computer screen.
  • May be asked to work a flexible schedule which may include holidays.
  • May be asked to travel for business or professional development purposes.
  • May be asked to work hours outside of normal business hours.
