At GCI, we solve the hard problems. As a SATCOM Systems Design Engineer, a typical day will include the following duties:

GCI is building a waveform, radio, and digital communications systems engineering facility in Chantilly, VA. The SATCOM Systems Design Engineer for this facility will design and support digital message traffic solutions across end-to-end architectures, from SATCOM to traditional IP networks. In this role, the engineer will be a technical solution leader on the team, where they will develop engineered designs and implementation plans for hardware and software-developed solutions to bring the facility online. GCI's facility will host customers that will bring their SATCOM designs (in whole or in part) to the facility for testing and proving their use cases. The engineer will support these clients by first designing the tests that will be run on their solutions and providing expert technical consulting in helping them improve or adapt their designs for their use cases.

The engineer will work with software defined radios, satellite terminals, varied RF waveforms, electronic system firmware, FPGAs, and networked Windows and Linux infrastructures. As a SATCOM Systems Design Engineer, you will serve as a primary technical authority and trusted partner to stakeholders, while guiding, mentoring, and advising engineering teams through the full lifecycle of planning, design, development, testing, and evaluation. The ideal candidate combines proven communications engineering experience across electrical, electronic, mechanical, and computer-based systems with the ability to shape solutions, influence design decisions, and deliver innovative, mission-critical capabilities that strengthen customer operations. Engineering duties include architecting communications systems and related components to include hardware, software, firmware, and scripting from design through testing.

Required Skills:

• Knowledgeable of and experience with radio frequency theory, radio propagation, L/S/C/X/Ku/Ka radio capabilities, and radio encryption methods.
• Knowledge of satellite communications technologies including Milstar capabilities, WGS capabilities, TDMA and FDMA network architecture, and know-how for accessing communications assets in space.
• Develop pseudo-code architectures and write FPGA code to implement software defined radio software and firmware.
• Experience with digital waveforms such as WCDMA, BPSK, QPSK, and DVB-SX.
• Experience with analog design of various circuits such as amplifiers, filters, regulators, feedback loops, and power supplies.
• Experience with Microsoft Windows and Linux networked environments.
• Knowledge of accepted standards pertaining to technical writing/documentation used in US Defense and Intelligence sectors associated with operational requirements documents, standard operating procedures, and quick reference guides.
• Strong computational background with experience in rapid prototyping
• Analytical mindset and good problem-solving skills with excellent written and verbal communication.
• Able to implement, design, and execute test plans
• Experience and proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, etc.).
• Have an active Security+ certification, or the ability to acquire it.
• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or related field.
• A candidate must be a US Citizen and requires an active TS/SCI clearance with ability to upgrade to polygraph.

Desired Skills:

• An Electrical Engineering background working with communication technologies.
• Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or related field.
• At least ten years of experience in US Defense and Intelligence SATCOM communication engineering.
• Experience and knowledge spanning across several types of wireless systems, digital/analog communications, and RF.
• Knowledge of networking fundamentals to include the OSI model, TCP/IP device addressing, routing, and network device management, and security concepts and technologies for confidentiality, integrity, and availability of communications.
• Version Control Software (e.g. SVN, Git).
• Issue Tracking Software (e.g. JIRA, Redmine, Trello).
• Experience with MATLAB
