We are seeking a Facility Engineer to serve as the primary technical resource and Design Authority for facility infrastructure issues and projects. This position is located in the Computational Complex, within the Facilities Management Division of the Facilities and Operations Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

As part of our team, you will be the resident authority on the engineering aspects of system operations and maintenance. Facility Engineers are responsible for ensuring configuration control, managing preventive and predictive maintenance programs, supporting system reliability, asset management, and maintenance optimization to ensure long-term operational performance.

As a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national laboratory, ORNL has an extraordinary 80-year legacy of solving the nation's most pressing challenges. These capabilities are essential to ORNL's broader mission: accelerating scientific discoveries and translating them into energy, environmental, and security solutions for the nation.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Serve as the Design Authority for facility and system modifications, overseeing design, construction, and acceptance testing.
  • Provide engineering support for the design, installation, and maintenance of electrical, mechanical, and HVAC systems.
  • Maintain deep technical knowledge of assigned facility systems and ensure configuration control through field verification and drawing updates.
  • Translate site walkdowns and stakeholder input into detailed scopes of work for facility modifications and services.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and regulations related to facility design and maintenance.
  • Develop, implement, and optimize preventive and predictive maintenance programs using system performance data and craft feedback.
  • Coordinate multi-craft maintenance activities and building outages to minimize downtime and support system reliability.
  • Lead pre-job planning and stakeholder meetings, and provide technical guidance for troubleshooting and emergency repairs.
  • Maintain accurate asset records, including equipment data, spare parts lists, and maintenance history to support asset management.
  • Plan and manage small to mid-scale projects, including cost estimation, scheduling, and coordination of in-house and contracted work.
  • Support larger capital projects led by internal project management teams and serve as Technical Project Officer for procurements and services.
  • Foster strong customer relationships by understanding needs, providing timely updates, and ensuring high service quality.
  • Collaborate effectively with craft personnel, contractors, and cross-functional teams, including work in union environments.
  • Ensure all work complies with Environmental, Safety, and Health (ES&H) and Quality Assurance (QA) requirements, aligning with ORNL's core values.

Basic Qualifications:
  • A BS in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution is required.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in facility systems, operations, and maintenance is required.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • A motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and contribute creatively as part of collaborative, cross-functional teams across the laboratory.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with diverse teams of engineers, scientists, and technicians.
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a fast-paced research environment, manage multiple priorities, and adapt to evolving needs.
  • Experience with HVAC systems and controls, industrial piping design, and 480 VAC 3-phase power distribution.
  • Proficiency in computer applications, along with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of Project Management Professional (PMP) principles; PMP certification is a plus.
  • Experience with preventive and predictive maintenance strategies, asset management systems, and spare parts tracking. Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional (CMRP) certification is a plus.
  • Familiarity with coordinating multi-craft maintenance activities and supporting utility plant operations.

Special Requirements:
  • Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
  • Q clearance with SCI: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Compartmented Information (SCI) clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program. In addition, due the SCI, you may also be subject to random polygraph testing.
  • Visa Sponsorship: Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Security, Credentialing, and Eligibility Requirements:

For employment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a Real ID compliant form of identification will be required. Additionally, ORNL is subject to Department of Energy (DOE) access restrictions. All employees must also be able to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card as mandated by Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, which requires a favorable post-employment background investigation.

To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.

For foreign national candidates:

If you have not resided in the U.S. for three consecutive years, you are not eligible for the PIV credential and instead will need to obtain a favorable Local Site Specific Only (LSSO) risk determination to maintain employment. Once you meet the three-year residency requirement, you will be required to obtain a PIV credential to maintain employment.
