Northrop Grumman Space Systems-Launch and Missile Defense Systems offers an excellent opportunity for a Sr Principal Engineer Systems - Interface (25-458), to join our team of skilled and diverse professionals. This role, based in Colorado Springs, CO, or Huntsville, AL, is essential in supporting the U.S. President, the Secretary of Defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and operational levels.
This position does not offer relocation support and requires on-site work with no remote options.
Position Overview:
The Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2BMC) program is a vital part of the Missile Defense System. It provides a critical operational platform that allows the U.S. president, the secretary of defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and tactical levels to systematically plan missile defense operations, monitor battle progress, and actively control networked sensors and weapon systems to achieve global and regional mission objectives. C2BMC offers a layered missile defense capability, providing an optimized response to threats across all ranges and flight phases. It functions as a force multiplier by connecting, integrating, and synchronizing autonomous sensor and weapon systems and operations both worldwide and locally to improve overall performance. Additionally, C2BMC is a key component of all ground and flight tests that verify and demonstrate the missile defense system's current and future capabilities.
The Interface Engineer will lead the development of ICDs and IDDs. This includes establishing new interfaces between external components, such as sensors, and other Command and Control Systems. The engineer will ensure that the ICDs and IDDs meet the program's required standards. Additionally, they are expected to develop various behavioral diagrams to understand and document the requirements. The engineer will create detailed requirements in DOORS to communicate with the implementation teams clearly. This position will be assigned to the C2BMC Systems Engineering Team within SEIT. The Interface Engineer is a Systems Engineer and may also be called upon to support non-interface systems engineering activities.
Essential Functions:
Salary range in Huntsville: $131,100 - $196,700
Salary range in Colorado Springs: $124,900 - $187,300

Primary Level Salary Range: $124,900.00 - $196,700.00
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.

Essential Functions:
- Will have significant experience in authoring ICDs and IDDs that are DID-compliant and to DoD Standards
- Must be able to function as part of an experienced team in developing systems engineering products and artifacts while adhering to the program Systems Engineering Management Plan (SEMP) and other processes
- Will develop and update multiple Interface Control Documents (ICDs) and Interface Design Documents (IDDs)
- Will attend interface working group meetings with MDA customers and representatives of the assigned external element engineering organization, as well as support program integration and test-related efforts for the associated interface
- May also be assigned to provide support:
- Other interface engineers involved in developing ICDs for additional BMDS Elements
- Support requirements engineering
- Developed Use Cases
- Perform logical architecture modeling tasks as required by the SE department
- Will support spiral leadership to ensure interface artifacts and system assessment tasks required for the assigned sensor interface are completed when needed
- Must possess an understanding of the systems engineering process and its principles
- Should have a proven track record of successfully applying system engineering principles to develop product solutions
- Must have experience in requirements elicitation, including the use of behavior diagrams as an analysis tool to understand and decompose requirements
- Requirements engineering and development of behavioral models and diagrams are required, including:
- Use cases
- Sequence diagrams
- Activity diagrams
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, are a must

Basic Qualifications:

- A Bachelor's Degree in STEM Science, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field from an accredited university is preferred, along with 8 years of experience; or a Master's degree (preferred) in a STEM related field with 6 years of relevant work experience; or a PhD in a related field with 4 years of relevant work experience
- Applicants must have a current, active in-scope DoD-issued Secret security clearance at the time of application, which is required to start
- Willingness and ability to travel up to 10% to support business needs
- Demonstrated Systems Engineering expertise with interface engineering, including creating Interface Control Documents (ICDs) and Interface Design Documents (IDDs), among other responsibilities:
- Message definition and processing rules
- Message formatting (e.g., XML, VMF, et al)
- Physical/network specifications and models, to include the ISO OSI model
- Physical/network topologies and devices
- Network protocols (e.g., TCP/IP, UDP, etc.) are a must
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in Systems Engineering
- Certification: INCOSE Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) Certification
- Certification: Object Management Group Certified Systems Modeling Professional - Model Builder Fundamental (OCSMP - MBF)
- Experience with authoring Missile Defense System (MDS) ICDs and IDDs is highly desirable
- Experience in authoring Complex Command and Control Systems ICDs and IDDs is highly desirable
- Requirements engineering, including experience with IBM Rationale's Dynamic Object-Oriented Requirements System (DOORS), is highly desirable
- Risk Management Framework (RMF)-based cybersecurity and familiarity with Agile or Iterative Development Methods are a plus
