BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
(A) Degree: in one or a combination of astronomy, physics, mathematics, space science, or electronics. The course work must have included differential and integral calculus and 12 semester hours in astronomy and/or physics.
OR
(B) Combination of education and experience -- at least 30 semester hours of courses equivalent to a major in any combination of astronomy, space science, physics, mathematics, and electronics, with required course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
There are no educational substitutions for basic requirements. Basic requirements are required for this position.

- You will serve as an ASTRONOMER in the VERY LONG BASELINE INTERFEROMETRY (VLBI) OPERATIONS DIVISION of the U.S. NAVAL OBSERVATORY (USNO) located in WASHINGTON, D.C.
- You will manage and track operational products from scheduling through process, analysis, and disposition.
- You will be responsible for processing and analyzing operational data, ensuring the VLBI division data are processed and analyzed in a timely and accurate manner, resolving data anomalies, and improving data quality.
- You will be the primary point of contact for the external, worldwide VLBI community with the Washington correlator facility and provide feedback to the Correlator VLBI Network Analyst and Correlator Technician regarding current operations.
- You will conduct scientific research, prepare and publish the results, stay current with relevant literature, analyze the results of polar motion and time observations, and study improvements, modifications, and suitability for inclusion.

- Experience leading a team of correlator scientists and engineers in correlator development and/or operational correlator production to meet current and future goals of increased efficiency, accuracy, throughput, and information assurance resiliency. Must use basic project management skills to coordinate the work of VLBI correlator scientists, engineers, and support staff to achieve success for current operations and future developmental work.
- Experience applying professional knowledge of astronomy and/or geodesy, which consists of a background in physics and mathematics with specialized study in astronomy and/or geodesy. Specific knowledge and experience in Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) technique is required. This knowledge should include experience with a DiFX correlator and associated HOPS geodetic VLBI software to participate in VLBI operations and correlation and to evaluate the scientific integrity of the VLBI data and correlator products. Must be capable of independent research and of representing the department at national and international forums.
- Experience demonstrating familiarity and proficiency with standard Linux command line shells and tools. Must have knowledge in computer programming. Must have experience with or be willing and able to quickly learn the programming languages and frameworks used in VLBI processing.
- Experience developing long-range plans, programs and/or precedents of an authoritative and state-of-the-art science and technological nature.
