MBA Consulting Services, Inc. (MBA CSi) is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to lead a high-impact migration project for the United States Postal Service. This role focuses on transitioning a six-node OpenVMS Cluster-running Apache and Tomcat-into a modern, high-availability SUSE Linux cluster environment.
This is a systems and environment migration role, in which applications, files, and data will be migrated to Linux while converting supporting scripts to modern scripting languages. Responsibilities
- Conduct discovery and planning for the migration of the existing OpenVMS cluster environment, including configuration, storage, applications, and dependencies.
- Configure and deploy a highly available SUSE Linux cluster environment, including network, storage, and security policies.
- Develop and execute a data migration strategy to securely transfer large data sets with minimal downtime from the existing system to the new system.
- Configure and validate Apache and Tomcat applications in the new Linux cluster.
- Analyze and convert OpenVMS DCL scripts into compatible Linux scripting languages (Bash, Python, Perl, Ruby, etc.).
- Implement comprehensive testing and validation to ensure functionality, performance, and reliability.
- Provide post-migration administration, maintenance, and performance tuning for the SUSE Linux environment.
- Create detailed documentation and assist in training technical staff on new systems and procedures.
- Bachelor's degree in Information Science, Information Technology, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field
- 5+ years of experience administering and supporting enterprise-level systems, including 3+ years with multi-node OpenVMS clusters (system management, failover, and user management).
- 5+ years of SUSE Linux system administration experience, including clustering, high-availability environments, package management, storage (SAN), Logical Volume Management (LVM) and network configuration. Proficiency in NetFilter framework (nftables), cluster-aware file systems, Access Control Lists (ACL) and Backup/Restore.
- 5+ years of scripting experience using Bash, Python, or similar languages (Perl, Ruby, etc.), including automation and legacy script conversion.
- 3+ years of experience deploying, configuring, and managing Apache HTTP Server and Apache Tomcat in Linux cluster environments. Able to configure multiple instances of Tomcat on the same server. Able to implement load balancing using Apache Tomcat connectors to Apache HTTP servers and multiple instances of Tomcat. Experience with Tomcat clustering.
- Demonstrated knowledge of OpenVMS Digital Command Language (DCL), including complex system-level scripting and file handling (RMS).
- Proven experience leading or supporting large-scale legacy system migrations (OpenVMS-to-Linux highly desirable).
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate across technical teams.
- Must be able to work on-site in Merrifield, VA.
- Must pass a background check and be to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance
- Knowledge of public/private key management.
- Proficiency in VISIO for system documentation.
- Windows Server 2022 administration experience.
