Job Title: Sr. Systems Engineer - Linux/OpenVMS Migration
Location: On-site | Merrifield, VA | USPS Engineering Systems Division
Ready to take on a high-impact engineering challenge? We're looking for a Sr. Software Engineer to lead a major system migration for the U.S. Postal Service. In this role, you'll drive the transformation of a six-node OpenVMS Cluster running APACHE and TOMCAT into a robust SUSE Linux environment-then keep it optimized, secure, and running at peak performance.
This isn't just maintenance-it's engineering at scale. You'll configure and tune Linux clusters, migrate critical data, and modernize legacy scripts into streamlined Linux functionality. What You'll Do
- Lead the migration from OpenVMS to SUSE Linux, ensuring stability and scalability.
- Configure Linux clusters and integrate APACHE, TOMCAT, and OpenJDK.
- Convert OpenVMS DCL shell scripts into Linux scripting.
- Partner with developers and engineers to keep systems humming long after go-live.
What You Bring
- 5+ years Linux scripting experience (bash, shell, etc.).
- 5+ years SUSE Linux system administration with clustering expertise.
- 3+ years hands-on with APACHE Web Server & APACHE TOMCAT.
- 3+ years OpenJDK experience.
- Strong communicator-able to collaborate across technical teams.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Must be able to work on-site in Merrifield, VA.
Must pass background check to obtain Public Trust Clearance
Bonus Skills (Preferred)
- OpenVMS background.
- Public/private key management experience.
- VISIO documentation skills.
- Windows Server 2022 admin experience.
