Job Description

JFL Consulting is seeking a Senior Technical Writer to produce clear, concise, and accurate documentation that supports site configurations, cybersecurity procedures, and IT operations. This role involves developing memos, SOPs, CONOPS, and technical reports in support of classified DoD environments. The ideal candidate has experience working closely with technical teams and can translate complex content into user-friendly, mission-ready documents. A background in journalism, marketing, or newsletters is highly valued, particularly for candidates who bring storytelling skills to technical communications.

Responsibilities:

Technical Documentation
  • Collaborate with SMEs and Cyber Operators to collect, validate, and translate technical data into standardized documentation formats, including CONOPS, SOPs, white papers, and assessment reports
  • Author and edit operational documents that support passive vulnerability analysis, incident response workflows, toolkit performance, and threat detection procedures
  • Maintain version-controlled document libraries and ensure traceability across project lifecycle deliverables using documentation tools and platforms (SharePoint, Teams)
  • Ensure compliance with DoD and IC documentation standards, including formatting, classification marking, and proper sourcing/referencing of technical data
  • Continuously refine document templates and contribute to the improvement of knowledge management practices and document standardization across the program
  • Track and update documentation requirements for security audits, accreditation packages (e.g., RMF, NIST 800-53), and compliance documentation when needed

Project & Program Support
  • Lead technical writing efforts for customer deliverables, including Monthly Status Reports (MSRs), Meeting Minutes, Risk Logs, Action Item Trackers, and Lessons Learned summaries
  • Coordinate cross-functional inputs from cybersecurity analysts, network engineers, and program leads to maintain up-to-date system documentation, architectural diagrams, and vulnerability reports
  • Support proposal and contract documentation development, including Statements of Work (SOWs), Performance Work Statements (PWS), and evaluation criteria responses
  • Occasional briefing support-assist in preparing high-quality slide decks, executive summaries, and technical briefs for senior leadership or government stakeholders

Communications & Journalism-Focused Writing
  • Draft internal memos, team newsletters, and user-facing content to enhance communication and transparency across technical and non-technical teams
  • Use journalistic writing techniques to turn technical outputs into compelling narratives for broader organizational awareness and executive consumption
  • Assist with light marketing-style content, such as case studies or project highlights, to communicate technical successes internally or with client stakeholders


Requirements

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in English, Communications, Journalism, Cybersecurity, or a related field

Experience:
  • 7+ years of experience as a technical writer, preferably in IT or cybersecurity settings
  • Experience supporting DoD, IC, or federal agency programs strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience documenting technical content related to cybersecurity operations, network defense, or vulnerability analysis

Technical Skills:
  • Familiarity with cybersecurity principles, technologies, and terminology.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, SharePoint, Adobe Acrobat, and collaborative platforms
  • Excellent grammar, formatting, and attention to detail

Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills:
  • Background in journalism, marketing communications, or newsletter writing
  • Technical Writing Certification (STC, TWHQ, or similar)
  • IAT Level II certification as defined and described in DoDD 8570.01, 8570.01-M, and 8140.01-03, and as amended. (e.g., Security+ CE, CySA+, CCNA Security, GSEC).
