Job Description

Spectrum Healthcare Resources is seeking a full-time, Coder to work at the Dumfries Ambulatory Care Clinic in Dumfries, VA. This opportunity provides the civilian Coder to work among the nation's best; our active military, veterans and their dependents.

This contract position offers:
  • 40 hours weekly Mon-Fri (7:30-3:30pm or 8:30am-5pm EST or 9:00am-5:30pm EST) with 1 Sat monthly (7am-2pm)
  • Outpatient Setting
  • Opportunity to Care for our Active Duty, Retiree's and their families
  • 11 paid federal holidays (no Sundays or on-call responsibilities)


The Coder's responsibilities include:

  • Making sure that codes are assigned correctly and sequenced appropriately as per government and insurance regulations
  • Complying with medical coding guidelines and policies
  • Receiving and reviewing patients' charts and documents for verification and accuracy
  • Following up and clarifying any information that is not clear to other staff members
  • Collecting information made by the Physician from different sources to prepare monthly reports
  • Implementing strategic procedures and choosing strategies and evaluation methods that provide correct results
  • Examining any medical malpractice that has been reported by analyzing and identifying the medical procedures, diagnoses or events that lead to the negligence
  • Have knowledge of computer operations and proficiency in the use of basic word processing, data entry, and automated records.
  • Superior communication skills
  • Shall be able to read, write, and speak English well enough to effectively communicate with patients and other staff members.


The Medical Coder must meet the following requirements:

  • Must maintain an AHIMA or AAPC certification
  • A high school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • One year related experience
  • Successful completion of a Medical Coding Course
  • Familiar with Microsoft Office applications Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Mail
  • Ability to work in an office environment as this is not a remote opportunity
