Northrop Grumman Space Systems-Launch and Missile Defense Systems have an exciting career opportunity for a Principal Systems Engineer - Software System Engineer to join our team of skilled and diverse professionals. Located in Colorado Springs, CO, this role is crucial in supporting the U.S. President, the Secretary of Defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and operational levels.

This position does not offer relocation assistance and requires on-site work with no remote options available.

Position Overview:

The Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2BMC) program is a vital part of the Missile Defense System. It provides a critical operational platform that enables the U.S. president, the secretary of defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and tactical levels to systematically plan missile defense operations, monitor battle progress, and actively manage networked sensors and weapon systems to achieve global and regional mission objectives.

C2BMC provides a layered missile defense capability, delivering an optimized response to threats across all ranges and flight phases. It functions as a force multiplier by connecting, integrating, and synchronizing autonomous sensor and weapon systems and operations both worldwide and locally to improve overall performance. Additionally, C2BMC is an essential part of all ground and flight tests that verify and demonstrate the missile defense system's current and future capabilities.

A Systems Engineer can fill this position with experience in Software Development, or a Software Engineer with Systems Engineering training and a desire to support the Systems Engineering V for the Software Development Team. This position is for a Software Systems Engineer on the C2BMC program. The candidate will be responsible for software systems engineering products for their Scrum Team, including developing software products. They will be accountable for performing in-depth analysis and providing technical support for systems software products, including complex problem resolution, design, development, testing, operational integration, and user support. The role also involves systems engineering support for the team that maintains debugs and configures related software products.

Essential Functions:
  • Perform tasks from specifications to develop or modify operating system applications
  • Assists with design, coding, benchmark testing, debugging, and documentation of programs
  • Collaborate with the SEIT organization to break down system requirements into manageable software-level requirements
  • Works with the SEIT organization to drive system use cases, concept of operations, and sequences
  • Collaborate with the SEIT organization to develop or update system external interfaces
  • Authors or assistants with proposals
  • Conducts software design, including software product-level use cases and sequences
  • Creates and maintains software design documents, such as:
    • Algorithm Design Documents
    • Functional Design Documents


Basic Qualifications:

Please list your current security clearance and IAT or relevant certifications on your resume, if applicable.
  • Bachelor's Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline or a related field from an accredited university is preferred, along with 5 years of experience; or a Master's degree in a related field with 3 years of relevant work experience, or a PhD and 1 year of related experience.
  • Ability and willingness to travel up-to 10% to support business needs
  • Applicants must have a current, active in-scope DoD-issued Secret security clearance at the time of application, which is required to start
  • Candidates with an active DoD 8140 certification at IAT Level II or higher (e.g., Security+, GSEC, SCNP, SSCP, CISSP, CISA, GSE, SCNA) are strongly preferred at the time of application. If such a certification is not held, it must be obtained within 40 days of the start date. The selected candidate will be responsible for securing and maintaining their DoD 8140 certification on their own personal time and at their own expense. Candidates who fail to obtain the required certification within 40 days will be evaluated for removal and subject to termination.

  • Understanding standard system engineering design artifacts such as Use Cases and SysML diagrams


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Candidates with an active DoD 8140 certification at IAT Level II or higher (e.g., Security+, GSEC, SCNP, SSCP, CISSP, CISA, GSE, SCNA) at the time of application are highly desired
  • Development of command and control system applications
  • Desired experience in automated testing and pipeline development
  • Experience in developing software for Unix/Linux and Windows platforms
  • Experience in software integration testing, including developing automated test scripts
  • Strong problem-solving abilities
  • Experience in performance modeling
  • Understanding build management tools and pipelines
  • Previous C2BMC experience
  • Experience working in an Agile development environment, with domain expertise in both Space and Missile Defense, including systems analysis, model-based system engineering, architecture development, virtualization, containerization, and cloud computing principles
  • Proven experience managing large multi-site software projects, including developing external interfaces
  • Experience in leading or conducting analyses of alternatives, trade studies, and design evaluations
  • Experience in designing large command and control or weapon systems
  • Knowledge of model-based systems engineering (MBSE) and related tools
  • The ideal candidate will have excellent verbal and written communication skills, work effectively independently, and be adaptable to a highly dynamic environment
  • Flexibility and willingness to take on unanticipated tasks are highly desirable
  • In-depth understanding of systems engineering process and principles
  • Proven track record of successfully applying system engineering principles to develop product solutions
  • Experience working in an integrated team environment with other systems, software, and specialty engineers to develop solutions
  • Experience with developing large, complex systems
  • Software development experience developing applications

Primary Level Salary Range: $91,200.00 - $136,800.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
