The Avionics Design Group (ADG) in Chandler, AZ is seeking a manager to lead and oversee a team of VHDL and software engineers. This role combines technical expertise with leadership responsibilities, requiring the ideal candidate to balance hands-on program contributions with team management. The successful applicant will be a technical contributor, dedicating approximately 85% of their time directly to program execution, design, implementation and verification while supporting the team's professional growth and ensuring project success.

As manager, you will have the unique opportunity to guide your team's technical direction, shape project outcomes, and contribute directly to the development of cutting-edge products and solutions. These efforts include developing, testing, optimizing and verifying VHDL-based FPGA designs and software applications.

Responsibilities :
  • Actively contribute to program deliverables (~85% of time), including hands-on development, troubleshooting, optimization and verification of VHDL, FPGA designs, and software solutions.
  • Provide technical leadership on VHDL and software development practices, tools, and methodologies, ensuring high-quality, reliable and efficient solutions.
  • Lead, motivate, and mentor a multidisciplinary engineering team, fostering technical excellence and professional growth.
  • Hiring and maintaining staff to ensure coverage for program demand.
  • Prioritize and assign tasks to the team, aligning resources to meet program schedules and milestones.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including hardware, systems, and test engineering, to develop and deliver integrated solutions.
  • Drive adherence to best practices, standards, and processes for both VHDL and software development.
  • Represent the team and provide status updates to upper management, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for the team's technical decisions and challenges.


Required Qualifications :
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
  • 5+ years of experience in VHDL development, FPGA design, and embedded software development, with a proven record of technical achievement, including 2 years of demonstrated leadership experience.
  • Strong technical knowledge of FPGA architecture, simulation tools, and verification methodologies.
  • Strong technical knowledge of software development.
  • Experience with program execution, including requirements gathering, design, implementation, testing, and integration.
  • Previous experience in a leadership or mentorship role, with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Exceptional ability to manage competing priorities and remain detail-oriented in a fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with configuration management tools and agile development practices.


Preferred Qualifications :
  • Experience with high-reliability systems (e.g., aerospace, defense, or medical applications).
  • Familiarity with HDL verification methodologies (OSVVM/UVM).
  • Familiarity with DO-254.
  • Expertise in additional hardware description languages (e.g., Verilog) and software programming languages (e.g., C, C++, Python).
  • Knowledge of signal processing or digital communication systems.
  • Background in full-lifecycle FPGA and software development.

Primary Level Salary Range: $112,000.00 - $168,200.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
