Political Contact Work, Networking, Advising, and Briefing
- Actively maintain and build the Afghanistan Affairs Unit's network of contacts among officials in the "interim government" announced by the Taliban, former officials of the Ghani Administration, representatives of the "political opposition," Afghan civil society activists, tribal and religious leaders, political analysts and academics, and local and regional political actors.
- Identify key contacts in national and subnational politics and facilitate relationships for the Afghanistan Affairs Unit's Political Officers. Recommend and arrange meetings to support the reporting needs of the Mission.
- Provide daily informal oral and written briefs on political developments in Afghanistan, focusing primarily on Dari and Pashto language sources.
Political Research, Analysis, and Drafting
- Monitor domestic political developments in Afghanistan by engaging a wide network of contacts, primarily those within Afghanistan, but also those located abroad. Attend virtual meetings, monitor national and subnational government publications, websites, social media, NGO reports, and/or other policy related documents. Monitor a wide range of Afghan media outlets (particular those in Dari and Pashto) and report on key issues, views, and other political developments.
- Synthesize information from various sources and independently draft concise political updates, ensuring that the Afghanistan Affairs Unit is informed of the latest developments in local, national, and regional politics of strategic importance to United States.
Interpretation and Translation
- Interpret between English and Dari and/or Pashto for the Afghanistan Affairs Unit staff as necessary. Translate documents between Dari and/or Pashto and English.
