Position Title: Director of Embedded Systems Development
Location: Havre de Grace, MD; Onsite 80%

Summary:
The Director of Embedded Systems Development will be a highly experienced and technically proficient leader responsible for overseeing all aspects of our embedded systems engineering, with a strong focus on FPGA design and Printed Circuit Board (PCB) development. This role requires a visionary leader who can manage and inspire a team of engineers to deliver high-quality, innovative, and reliable embedded solutions. The ideal candidate will have a deep technical understanding of the full hardware-software co-design lifecycle, from architectural concept to production. They will be responsible for defining and executing the technical strategy for embedded systems, ensuring seamless integration between hardware and software components. Experience or understanding of real-time electronic sense and response techniques and capabilities is highly desirable.
Key Responsibilities:
• FPGA & PCB Development Strategy and Oversight:
◦ Define and drive the technical roadmap for embedded systems, with a specific focus on FPGA-based solutions and complex PCB designs.
◦ Identify required capabilities, potential sources and investment recommendations for PCB fabrication.
◦ Oversee the entire FPGA development lifecycle, including requirements definition, architectural design, RTL coding (VHDL/Verilog), simulation, synthesis, and on-board validation.
◦ Direct the PCB design process, from schematic capture and component selection to layout, signal integrity analysis, and manufacturing oversight.
◦ Ensure all hardware designs meet rigorous technical specifications, performance metrics, and DFM/DFT (Design for Manufacturability/Testability) requirements.
◦ Stay current with the latest FPGA technologies, EDA tools, and high-speed PCB design best practices.
• Product Development & Cross-Functional Collaboration:
◦ Lead the full product development lifecycle from initial concept through design, prototyping, testing, and production.
◦ Oversee US Government COTS integration.
◦ Drive the hardware/software co-design process, ensuring efficient communication and collaboration between hardware, firmware, and software teams.
◦ Collaborate closely with product management, mechanical engineering, QA, and manufacturing teams to ensure seamless product integration and successful market launch.
◦ Manage and mitigate technical and schedule risks, making critical decisions to keep projects on track.
◦ Create and maintain comprehensive technical documentation, including specifications, design documents, and test plans for both hardware and software.
• Expertise:
◦ Provide hands-on technical guidance and expertise on complex FPGA design challenges, timing closure, and high-speed digital design issues.
◦ Orchestra SDR configurations, data flow, extract signals, develop signal processing algorithms.
Guide the team in selecting appropriate microcontrollers, FPGAs (e.g., Xilinx, Intel), and other critical components.
◦ Drive the development of embedded software and firmware, including low-level drivers, communication protocols, and RTOS-based applications.
◦ Ensure robust testing methodologies are in place for both hardware and software, including unit testing, integration testing, and system-level validation.
◦ Deep understanding of signal integrity (SI) and power integrity (PI) principles and their application in high-speed PCB design.
• Leadership and Management:
◦ Lead, mentor, and grow a diverse team of embedded software, firmware, FPGA, and PCB design engineers.
Qualifications
Education:
• Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
◦ A Bachelors with extensive experience will be considered.
Experience:
• Minimum of 12+ years of experience in embedded systems development.
• Minimum of 7+ years of experience in a leadership or management role, leading teams with significant FPGA and PCB design responsibilities.
• Proven track record of successfully bringing multiple complex embedded products to market.
• Experience with defense sensing domains preferred.
• Experience with Agile development preferred.
• Active security clearance preferred.
Skills:
• Technical Skills:
◦ Extensive, hands-on experience with FPGA development, including Verilog/VHDL, synthesis tools, and timing analysis.
◦ Deep expertise in high-speed digital PCB design, including schematic capture and layout tools (e.g., Altium Designer, Cadence Allegro, KiCad).
◦ Strong knowledge of signal integrity, power integrity, and EMC/EMI best practices.
◦ Proficiency in embedded C/C++ programming for microcontrollers and embedded Linux/RTOS environments.
◦ Experience with various communication protocols (e.g., PCIe, Ethernet, DDR, I2C, SPI).
◦ Familiarity with hardware lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, spectrum analyzers, and protocol analyzers.
• Leadership and Soft Skills:
