Chemical Process Engineer – Huntsville, AL
Salary Range: $80,000 – $95,000
Overview
We are seeking a skilled Chemical Process Engineer to design, engineer, and test chemical process systems and equipment for industrial applications, including chemical plants, refineries, power plants, nuclear power plants, and nuclear fuel processing facilities. Experience in the commercial and government (DOE) nuclear sector is a strong plus. This role may serve as a lead engineer and/or supervise other chemical engineering professionals while working within a collaborative, multidisciplinary project team.
You’ll be instrumental in developing technical solutions, driving process improvements, and ensuring projects meet rigorous safety, quality, and performance standards.
Key Responsibilities
Develop design basis and requirements documentation.
Create material and energy balances, Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Utility Flow Diagrams (UFDs), and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
Perform equipment sizing, line sizing, and pressure drop calculations.
Use engineering software (e.g., AFT Fathom, AFT Arrow) for fluid dynamic simulations.
Prepare datasheets, specifications, and process control narratives.
Conduct and support HAZOP, PHA, What-If analysis, and FMECA reviews.
Size and specify pressure relief devices in compliance with ASME and API standards.
Collaborate closely with instrumentation & controls engineers on control concepts.
Lead, mentor, and train junior engineers.
Support proposal development, cost estimates, and productivity improvements.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s in Chemical Engineering (or related field) with 5+ years of directly related experience, or Master’s with 3+ years.
Experience:
5–10 years in chemical process engineering.
Strong plus for nuclear industry and DOE/DOD project experience.
Proven leadership in developing preliminary through detailed design packages.
Familiarity with relevant codes, standards, and engineering practices.
Experience in spectroscopy analysis, GC/MS inorganic chemical analysis, and gaseous chemical separation/concentration.
Skills:
Excellent communication, presentation, and analytical skills.
Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing/6 Sigma/Kaizen principles.
Active PE License is a strong plus.
