The primary purpose of this position is: to serve as an Air Reserve Technician (ART) journeyman mechanic that troubleshoots, tests, repairs, modifies, overhauls, services, and dispatches powered ground support equipment and to train reservists in the accomplishment of tasks set forth herein.

DUTIES:
DUTY 1: Performs preventive maintenance on ground power support systems. Checks equipment for fuel, lubricants, coolant, and battery water levels. Checks pumps, batteries, fan belts, and spark plugs for wear and tear or replacement. Checks engine performance, generator bearings, and oil and temperature gauges. Changes fuel filters, oil filters, air filters, and lube oil. Performs major maintenance on ground support equipment such as power sources, major components, support components, and associated components. Troubleshoots, tests, repairs, modifies, and overhauls equipment and components, as required.

DUTY 2: Performs periodic routine and special inspections of all scheduled equipment. Utilizes safety practices and procedures and complies with following established security and safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment. Uses and assures proper fit of required safety equipment and clothing. Follows federal and state rules when storing, using, handling, labeling, and disposing of hazardous materials and waste in accordance with environmental standards.

DUTY 3: Prepares accurate, complete, and up-to-date records of actions taken and assures documentation is properly signed and coordinated in a timely manner. Certifies work produced under the USAF Technical Order Program. As required, verifies and certifies work processes and procedures of certified coworkers and trainees and adequacy of work accomplished. Attends and successfully completes On the Job Training (OJT) and any required classroom training required to be certified on assigned tasks.

DUTY 4: Maintains and controls tools. Ensures tools are properly marked, calibrated (if necessary), and are secured when area is unattended. Reports any lost tools in accordance with applicable procedures. Ensures the tool inventory log is properly signed in accordance with established procedures. Ensures that assigned equipment, special precision tools, and materials are handled, stored, and protected correctly.

DUTY 5: Cleans work area and equipment. Maintains an organized work area and practices good housekeeping. Accomplishes daily cleanup of work area at designated times. Ensures that workers maintain cleanliness of their work stations. Dispatches support equipment. Using appropriate towing vehicles, tows and positions equipment around aircraft and hangars by schedules or as directed. Delivers serviceable equipment to the flight-line. Responds to calls for unserviceable equipment and initiates necessary actions to correct the problem.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C for WG 5300-Industrial Equipment Maintenance Group.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG 5300-Industrial Equipment Maintenance Group. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of an POWERED SUPPORT SYSTEMS MECHANIC with little to no supervision.

JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
  • Knowledge of principles of electricity (AC/DC), solid state circuitry, and safety rules and regulations pertaining to powered support systems. Knowledge of tool, equipment, and materials accounting and security.
  • Knowledge of the theory and operation of internal combustion diesel and gasoline engines. Knowledge of equipment placement around aircraft, radio discipline and flight-line driving procedures.
  • Knowledge of the operation of emergency generator power systems. Skill in troubleshooting complex situations related to electrical power generators. Ability to repair jacks, ladders, platforms, trailers, stands and other non-powered equipment.
  • Knowledge of regulations, procedures, and policies related to records maintenance and documentation. Skill in reading, interpreting, and using wiring diagrams, schematic drawings, technical orders, technical publications, and similar guides.
  • Skill in using hand and power tools, instruments, test equipment, and electrical meters to include special tools such as hydraulic knock-out tools, hammers, drills, valve spring compressors, and micrometers. Skill in installing, operating, inspecting, maintaining, repairing, and modifying generators, automatic transfer switches, and uninterruptible power systems; and in maintaining, overhauling, repairing, and reconditioning internal combustion engines, both diesel and gasoline.
  • Knowledge of safety and security requirements as outlined in applicable standards, regulations and policy statements. Knowledge of USAF Technical Order Program and its procedures. Ability to apply shop procedures, policies, written and oral instructions, and directives sufficient to provide training to others. Ability to clean work area and/or job site upon completion of work.

  • OTHER SIGNIFICANT FACTS:
    • This is an Air Reserve Technician (ART) position. Must meet and maintain Air Force Reserverequirements. The incumbent's regular assignments are primarily ART duties; however, the incumbent may also be assignedsome non-ART duties, generally not exceed 30 % of total responsibilities.
    • Work schedules will be so aligned to allow the individual to function fully on unit training assembly (UTA) weekends.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.
    • Performs uncommon tours of duty. May be required to work other than normal duty hours which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
    • May be required to fly in military or commercial aircraft for TDY purpose

    ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: May work inside or outside. Inside work involves frequent exposure to drafts, changing temperature, and loud noise. Outside work may involve exposure to bad weather, rain or snow, or wet or icy conditions. Both inside and outside, frequently exposed to irritation or discomfort from dust, heat, fumes, and hard damp floors or surfaces. May work on parts and systems which are dirty and greasy and which may be dangerous to operate or repair because of defects. Incumbent is frequently exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts, burns, bruises, strains, and electrical shock whilerepairing, positioning, adjusting, and moving equipment, and is exposed to the possibility of receiving burns and skin irritationsfrom acids, fluids, and lubricants. To reduce the dangers and irritations from the above conditions, the incumbent mustfollow numerous safety procedures and wear equipment such as protective eye glasses, ear devices, hard hats, hard-toeshoes, respirators, gloves, and clothing. Some of these safety items may be uncomfortable to wear or use, and may be worn or used for long periods.

    FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Performs work which involves frequent bending, reaching, crouching, standing, and arm movement. Sometimes must work in awkward positions or cramped areas. Must frequently lift and carry items weighing up to about 40pounds and lift heavier items using jacks, hoists, or helpers.

    PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
