Department Summary:

The Army Soldier and Weapon Systems Department (N214) mission is to provide world class engineering workforce for combat, testing, and training capabilities to provide the U.S. Army an asymmetric advantage. Key sponsors of the Department work program include PEO Simulation, Training and Instrumentation (Orlando, FL), PEO Soldier (Fort Belvoir, VA), DEVCOM Soldier System Center (Natick, MA), Synthetic Training Environment Cross Functional Team (Fort Leavenworth, KS), PEO Missiles and Space and PEO Aviation (Huntsville, AL), PEO Ground Combat Systems and the Ground Vehicle Systems Center (Ann Arbor, MI), Army Test and Evaluation Command (Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD) and JPEO Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Defense (Edgewood, MD). The work programs leverage a diverse set of technical disciplines from within the Department and across the corporation to maximize our impact in solving some of the Army's toughest modernization challenges in the areas of systems engineering, agile software development, test and evaluation, digital engineering, autonomous systems, and training.

Job Description:

The Army Soldier and Weapons Systems Department is seeking a technical oriented, radar systems engineering leader to serve in the PEO Missiles and Space (PEO MS) office in Huntsville, AL. Successful candidates will work closely with senior government civilian and military leaders to define and execute MITRE's work. The candidate must be willing to support meetings and engage with government stakeholders at least four days a week. Regular sponsor interaction will be required, and the candidate may be expected to co-locate in government or contractor spaces. This position is located in Huntsville, AL and open to qualified Lead step and above applicants.

As an experienced electrical engineer, you will apply engineering principles and expertise to bring technical solutions to bear on the government's toughest challenges in the acquisition, design, testing, integration, verification, and fielding of ground radar capabilities. This position will work within a PEO MS radar program office and help as part of an integrated product team lead strategic technical roadmaps and deliver technical performance and risk analyses for ground-based missile defense radar development.

Applicants selected for this position will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or applicants who are eligible for security clearances. This position requires ability to obtain Top Secret/SCI clearance.

Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Lead technical radar systems, software, and hardware development and capability updates, as a Radar product office Strategic Partner throughout the integrated product teams and with external stakeholders, across multiple end users
  • Develop technical sensors concepts and recommendations that consider risk, extensibility, and affordability
  • Develop and implement plans for prototyping and assessing future radar concepts and capability development
  • Work with Systems Engineers to develop functional, performance and interoperability requirements for radar capabilities added to operational baselines
  • Assess performance of radar systems, software, and hardware engineering studies to inform program management decisions
  • Technical acquisition support to the government program management, contractual statement of work (SOW) development, technical contract evaluation, and contract negotiation technical expertise
  • Have willingness to work within a government integrated product team environment partnering technical outcomes across multiple stakeholders and organizations
  • Leverage a technical understanding of Army Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) systems to ensure interoperability and complimentary integration along with electronic warfare development efforts are achieved with PM STARE.
  • Assist the LTAMDS PdM by:
    • Identifying gaps and shortfalls in operational performance and propose effective mitigations.
    • Developing CONOPs, TTPs, and business processes to support joint, interagency, and coalition interoperability.
    • Perform technical radar modeling and analysis to support operational and technical assessments of Army Radar systems.
    • Develop strategic roadmaps and deliver technical performance and risk assessments for capability development to support Golden Dome and Defense of Guam
  • Assist with larger cross sponsor working group leadership and execution:
    • Develop, make recommendations, and implement systems engineering changes
    • Deliver strategy and recommendations to deliver optimal Technical Performance through the application of system engineering principles and best practices
    • Recognize technical challenges and lead engineering activities to deliver appropriate solutions
  • Identify and articulate program risks and associated opportunities
  • Establish goals and communicate clear expectations and guidance that contribute to highest priority sponsor outcomes
  • Establishing strong relationships within the sponsor organization.
  • Defining opportunities to collaborate with organizations outside of the sponsor to create a greater mission outcome.


Basic Qualifications:
  • Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or similar technical field; or 6 years and a Master's degree; or 3 years and a PhD; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
  • Active Top Secret Clearance
  • Technical background in disciplines of relevance in one or more of the following: missile systems, radar systems, communications, command and control, fire control, and/or networking.
  • 6+ years of experience in applying expert experience level to developing and evolving sensors or radar technical capabilities and defense programs through the practical application of physics-based engineering, technical assessment, and/or systems engineering best practices
  • Extensive knowledge of missile and air defense systems, enterprise systems engineering, C4I, cyber security, information technology, communications, sensors, and capability integration at the enterprise/dept of defense level
  • Strong analytical skills with experience in operational and technical assessments of Missile Defense Radar and Fire Control Systems.
  • Background in mission and electronic warfare threat analysis
  • Ability to identify gaps and shortfalls in operational performance and propose effective mitigations.
  • Experience in developing CONOPs, TTPs, and business processes to support joint, interagency, and coalition interoperability.
  • Demonstrated experience leading analytical/assessment efforts and yielding impactful results at high levels of government and/or industry.
  • Proven experience engaging sponsors with successful impacts and outcomes, and establishing and maintaining strategic partnerships
  • Established track record in leading the delivery of data-driven technical products with the military warfighting domain, resulting in positive mission impact.
  • Demonstrated ability to take risks and lead work with partial insights, and operate effectively autonomously
  • Demonstrated ability to build collaboration across organizational units.
  • Demonstrates collaboration and communication skills to support individual, team, and customer-related interaction.
  • Critical thinking, analytic, and problem-solving skills - comfortable working in dynamic settings where task objectives may evolve or need to be shaped, or creative solutions to task impediments must be identified.
  • Excellent interpersonal and technical communication skills, with the ability to author technical reports, present briefings, and persuasively speak to audiences of all backgrounds, including executives or senior customers.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in an interdisciplinary team environment, establish and leverage a diverse professional network, and integrate contributions from a variety of resources (people, tools, organizations).
  • This position requires a minimum of 4 days a week on-site.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • An advanced degree in Electrical Engineering or related field and with at least 8 years of experience
  • Active TS/SCI Clearance
  • Experience in sensor target discrimination techniques
  • Experience with the LTAMDS radar or other Missile Defense radar programs
  • Technical expertise in the electronic warfare domain
  • Prior experience developing or assessing Army systems or operations, reflected by:
    • Working knowledge of Army organizations, missions, roles/responsibilities, and relationships.
  • Recognized as a thought leader and one who dynamically and proactively executes leadership and consensus decisions
