We have an exciting new opportunity and are currently looking to add a Telecommunications Mechanic II to our berthing and maintenance team, supporting Naval Base Yokosuka, Japan. Duties and Responsibilities:
• Install, remove, maintain, modify, troubleshoot, and repair voice and nonvoice communications systems including intercom and public address systems; alarm systems; and electronic and electromechanical telephone key systems; terminal and communications equipment, including line drivers and computer cabling and networking
• Run cables, key cables, or wire to all telephone sets, terminal connectors, lugs, pins, or screws, associated with key telephone equipment and terminating equipment for nonvoice circuits
• Skilled in installing, removing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing intercom and public address systems; teletype equipment; and electronic and electromechanical telephone key systems, telephones, PAC-STAR telephone systems, interface/ancillary equipment such as modems, line drivers, patch panels, station carrier units, line couplers for speed dialers, voice recorders, telefax machines, and local wire and cable in support of voice and nonvoice networks for computers, data, and alarm circuits; and skills in the use test equipment such as: voltmeters, ohmmeters, current flow and continuity testers, handsets, breakout boxes, decibel meters, and optical time domain reflectometers, and computer diagnostic equipment to analyze and restore faulty voice and nonvoice circuits.
• Provide technical assistance to entry level computer operators and assisting programmers, systems analysts, and subject matter specialists in resolving problems.
• Maintain, troubleshoot and repair Fire and Flooding Alarm System
• Maintain, troubleshoot and repair CATV systems
• Maintain, troubleshoot and repair LAN equipment
• Troubleshoot and repair X09/X10 door locks and KABA Simplex locks
• Additional tasks and duties may be assigned.
May also resolve a variety of difficult computer operating problems (e.g., making unusual equipment connections and rarely used equipment and channel configurations to direct processing through or around problems in equipment, circuits, or channels or reviewing test run requirements and developing unusual system configurations that will allow test programs to process without interfering with ongoing job requirements). In response to computer output instructions and error conditions or to avoid loss of information or to conserve computer time, operator deviates from standard procedures. Such actions may materially alter the computer unit's production plans.
Receives work assignments from the supervisor or foreman in the form of service tickets, work orders or on a project basis. Independently determines the work sequences, tools, and materials required. Follows or refers to layout sheets, craft plans, floor plans, circuit schematics and descriptions, and manufacturers technical guidance. Completed work may be subject to spot checks by the foreman, lead, supervisor or quality control personnel.
Required Qualifications:
• Associate’s Degree in related field.
• 3+ years of experience installing, testing, maintaining, removing and repairing intercom and public address systems and calibrating communications equipment.
• Troubleshooting experience with voice/no-voice communication systems.
• Experience with computer cabling and networking.
• Experience in use of test equipment such as: voltmeters, ohmmeters, current flow and continuity testers.
• Must be able to pass a government background check.
• Valid Driver’s License
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience with CATV and LAN equipment, as far as maintaining troubleshooting and repairing.
• Experience with troubleshooting and repairing phone systems, computer cabling and networking.
• Experience with troubleshooting and repairing alarm systems (fire and flooding), intercoms.
• Read, interpret and implement job specifications.
• Perform required testing of installed wiring using specifications and drawings.
• Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes, no less than 30lbs.
• Must be able to work on and climb ladders.
• Be able to work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces.
• Able to perform other duties as assigned which may involve high heat, humidity, noise, and dirty conditions as well as working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
• Valid driver’s license (required)
Required Education:
• Associate’s Degree in related field.
The physical job requirement involves, but is not limited to, walking, reaching, bending-over, concentration in the presence of noise, lifting items up to 50 lbs., and traversing narrow passageways, climbing ladders/stairs, and operating in confined spaces onboard naval vessels and barges and in buildings.
