Title: Senior Security Engineer
Location: Remote – Must reside in VA, MD, DC, PA, MI, NC, SC, GA, TN, or OH
Job Type: Full-Time
Company Overview:
We’re partnering with an award-winning federal technology consultancy that combines deep technical excellence with a mission-driven ethos. This organization supports high-impact federal initiatives across cybersecurity, application modernization, and secure infrastructure—and they do it while maintaining a collaborative, respectful, and low-ego engineering culture.
Their client is a major federal office known for its stability, seriousness of mission, and strong leadership. The team is small, high-trust, and working on active red/blue teaming, secure application deployments, and vulnerability remediation for systems that matter.
Role Summary:
We’re hiring a Senior Security Engineer to join a small but mighty security team supporting one of the highest-profile offices in the U.S. government. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in technical deep-dives, enjoys mentoring others, and can communicate with both engineers and senior stakeholders.
You’ll be working alongside another senior security engineer and interfacing directly with software teams and government leadership. This is a fully remote role with occasional travel to Washington, D.C. for team meetings or briefings.
Responsibilities:
Conduct security reviews of application code before production deployments
Monitor and respond to vulnerabilities in COTS and open-source tools
Perform active defense, user profiling, and monitoring using Fortinet and other tools
Collaborate with developers to implement custom app monitoring and security alerts
Lead or participate in blue/red team exercises and implement defense-in-depth strategies
Administer and tune Fortinet WAFs and firewalls
Clean up data spills, maintain documentation, and attend threat intelligence briefings
Interface directly with stakeholders—including senior government leadership—with professionalism and respect
Mentor teammates and contribute to a culture of technical excellence
Qualifications:
Must-Haves:
U.S. Citizenship and ability to pass EOP-level federal background check
5–10+ years of hands-on security experience (preferably supporting government systems)
Strong knowledge of networking protocols, diagnostics, and system hardening
Proficiency with Fortinet technologies or similar firewalls/WAFs
Scripting or programming experience in at least one language (Python, Bash, Java, Go, etc.)
Familiarity with FISMA, NIST 800-53, or similar frameworks
Comfortable presenting technical findings to both engineers and leadership
Humble, curious, and respectful—this team values engagement without ego
Nice-to-Haves:
OSCP or similar certifications
Experience supporting blue/red team simulations
Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and containerized environments
Prior exposure to RMF or public sector cybersecurity programs
Bachelor’s degree (preferred, but experience matters most)
Benefits:
Competitive salary range
Remote-first work environment (occasional D.C. travel as needed)
Work on systems that have real impact, with leadership that respects your craft
Collaborative culture with strong engineering autonomy
Support from a small, focused team that loves what they do
