Cloud Systems Design & Development Engineer

This position requires an Active Secret Clearance. Candidates who do not hold this clearance are not eligible for hire.. This is a remote position, however candidates must live within a reasonable driving distance of Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford, MA. This position is contingent on award.

Day in the life:

• Collaborate with stakeholders (product managers, other engineers, business teams) to gather and understand business requirements and translate them into technical specifications for cloud-based systems
• Design scalable, reliable, secure, and cost-efficient cloud architectures for new applications and services, considering different cloud service models (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS) and deployment models (public, private, hybrid)
• Develop technical documentation, including architecture diagrams, interface specifications, and data models
• Evaluate and select appropriate cloud services, technologies, and tools from major cloud providers (AWS, Azure, GCP) to meet design goals
• Develop, test, and debug cloud-native applications and services using various programming languages (e.g., Python, Java, Go, JavaScript, Ruby) and frameworks
• Implement Infrastructure as Code (IaC) principles using tools like Terraform, CloudFormation, or Ansible to automate the provisioning and management of cloud resources
• Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines to automate build, deployment, and testing processes, fostering a DevOps culture
• Integrate cloud applications with existing on-premises systems and third-party services
• Configure and manage virtual machines, containers (Docker), and serverless computing resources (e.g., AWS Lambda, Azure Functions, Google Cloud Functions)
• Establish network architecture within cloud environments, including VPCs, subnets, and security groups
• Implement and optimize cloud storage solutions (object storage, block storage, file systems)
• Monitor performance metrics, system reliability, and resource utilization of cloud applications and infrastructure
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues related to cloud systems.
• Implement security best practices, including identity and access management (IAM), encryption, and network security, to protect cloud resources
• Identify opportunities for cost optimization and efficiency improvements within the cloud environment
• Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams (developers, operations, security, data scientists)
• Participate in code reviews and contribute to improving software engineering best practices
• Mentor junior cloud engineers, sharing knowledge and best practices
• Strong hands-on experience with at least one major cloud provider (AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform). Certifications in these platforms are highly desirable
• Solid experience with IaC tools like Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, Ansible, or Puppet
• Experience with CI/CD tools and methodologies (e.g., Jenkins, GitLab CI/CD, Azure DevOps, CircleCI)
• Proficient with Git and Git workflows
• Understanding of cloud security principles, identity and access management (IAM), data encryption, and compliance frameworks

Requirements/Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree 3 years of relevant experience Associate degree 5 years of relevant experience, or 7 years of relevant experience with no degree
• Active Secret clearance
• US Citizenship
• Demonstrated experience in building and operating distributed systems
• Experience with Agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban)
• Experience with cloud monitoring and logging tools (e.g., CloudWatch, Azure Monitor, Stackdriver, Prometheus, Grafana, ELK stack)
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a systematic approach to diagnosing and resolving complex issues
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills to collaborate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment and contribute to shared goals
• A strong sense of ownership and the drive to deliver high-quality solutions

Benefit selection, customer contractual specifications, relevant work experience, skills, competencies, certifications, and clearance status will influence the final salary
Full benefits: $125,000 to $185,000 annually
Reduced benefits (no medical, dental, vision): Up to $200,000 annually
