Amentum is seeking a Boxcar Repairperson - Journeyman to join our team in Hawthorne, Nevada to support the Hawthorne Army Depot. A Boxcar Repairperson - Journeyman, also known as a Railcar Repairman or Carman, is responsible for maintaining and repairing railway cars, including boxcars, according to industry standards.

Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret US Government Clearance. Note: US Citizenship is required to obtain a Secret Clearance.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Perform repairs, modifications, and upgrades to various types of railcars and their components, such as bolsters, side frames, hitch heads, and box car doors.
  • Visually inspecting cars and their components to identify defects, wear, and damage, and to ensure they meet standards set by the Association of American Railroads (AAR), Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), and the company.
  • Boxcar repairmen often perform welding and cutting tasks as part of their repair duties.
  • Conduct various mechanical labor tasks, including disassembling units, repairing or replacing worn parts, and using hand tools and power tools.
  • Required to maintain records of the condition of cars, repairs performed, and maintenance needed.
  • Reads and understands Task Hazard Analysis for identifying risks to health and safety during job specific tasks in the work place.
  • Responsible for reporting potential real environmental concerns to the Environmental Service.
  • Follows oral or written instructions, accomplishes work assignments without direct supervision.
  • Perform all work safely and with the utmost concern for the safety of self and other employees.
  • Perform all work in compliance with environmental permits and regulations.
  • May be required to work overtime
  • Be at work when scheduled and maintain a good attendance record.
  • May be assigned occasional duties of a higher level of difficulty than those listed above.
  • Remains alert for hazards involved in operating heavy equipment and observe safety and operating regulations.
  • Performs other duties of the same or lower level of difficulty as assigned.


Minimum Requirements:
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Three (3) years' experience at the journeyman level.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Good writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be able to operate a computerized based terminal.
  • Must be computer literate in common software applications and able to operate general office equipment.
  • Must maintain fitness-for-duty standards to perform the essential functions of the position, to include any HWAD drill, contingency and/or emergency requirement.
  • Must be able to work in a constant state of alertness in a safe manner. Perform safety sensitive duties.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain all certifications as required by the Master Training Plan.
  • Must have and maintain a valid State driver's license.
  • Must be a United States or naturalized citizen able to obtain and maintain Hawthorne Army Depot (HWAD) site access.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret US Government Clearance, as well as a Clearance through the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms and be favorably vetted through the NCIC III System. Note: US Citizenship is required to obtain these Clearances.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Technical or trade schooling is highly desirable.

This position is designated as a safety sensitive position and is subject to the requirements of the HWAD Medical Surveillance Plan and Matrix and the HWAD A&D Program. As a condition of employment, candidates and incumbents must favorably complete a personnel security investigation, drug testing, medical exam and respiratory screening, and must meet and maintain personnel suitability and reliability requirements established by 29 CFR and Army Regulations: AR 190-11, AR 190-13 and DOD Contractors Safety Manual 4145.26.

HIRING HOURLY Rate of Pay: $35.61 (Hourly rate set by [CBA])

  • PTO - 120 hours per year, accrued at 4.62 hours per pay period
  • Sick leave - One (1) hour of accrual for every thirty (30) hours worked
  • Eleven (11) Paid Holidays per calendar year
