Responsibilities

Background

This position provides support for the Office of Space Launch (OSL) Mission Assurance Team (MAT) which is seeking an experienced structures lead for multi-company (Arcfield, FFRDC, SETA and Launch Vehicle Provider) team in. Duties include identification and development of independent and objective technical risk assessments at the system and subassembly level of mission critical launch vehicle composite and metallic components.

Responsibilities

  • Direct the review and evaluation of the design, test plans, test data, analyses, and results of Launch vehicle structural composite or metallic assemblies or subassemblies.
  • Assess the impact of flight anomalies, out-of-family conditions, hardware non-conformances & changes on future missions.
  • Perform Independent review of analyses and test data in support of mission assurance. Provide on console support of tests & launches and evaluate real-time data.
  • Provide leadership, oversight, and direction for structures panel members in their day-to-day activities, including personnel assignments to meetings, and hardware reviews across multiple launch providers
  • Lead reviews (on-site/remote) in the Structures discipline or co-lead system-based reviews at the hardware supplier and launch vehicle provider including launch sites. Duties include managing other Structures engineers and presenting results of the review to MAT management and customers
  • Coordinate and interact with the MAT Avionics and Propulsion disciplines as required on system issues to help bring issues/concerns to proper resolution.
  • Support launch provider and/or subcontractor technical interchange meetings, internal MAT meetings/engineering review boards
  • Provide management insight into launch vehicle provider technical activities and reviews (Engineering meetings, Anomaly investigations, etc.).
  • Prepare and brief status of issues to MAT & OSL leadership.
  • Document technical issues in the on-line tools and perform mission risk assessments.
  • Present at internal and external meetings including mission assurance reviews to the OSL Mission Director

Qualifications

Experience

  • BS 16-18, MS 14+, PhD 10+
  • Sixteen or more years of experience in launch vehicle structural design, analysis, and/or test.
  • Ten or more years of experience in team leadership
  • Launch vehicle structures background with exposure to a variety of providers - e.g. SpaceX (preferred) and United Launch Alliance (ULA).

Skills:

  • Have a solid fundamental understanding in mechanical engineering principles with excellent analytical skills to solve challenging problems.
  • Demonstrated small team leadership skills and team lead collaboration skills
  • Must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI clearance is required.
  • The program supports travel to the launch vehicle manufacturer, major element suppliers and integration/launch facilities.
  • This position may require significant travel (~25%) to conduct job duties.

  • The work location is flexible and includes the ability to work remote.

This is the projected compensation range for this position. There are differentiating factors that can impact a final salary/hourly rate, including, but not limited to, Contract Wage Determination, relevant work experience, skills and competencies that align to the specified role, geographic location (For Remote Opportunities), education and certifications as well as Federal Government Contract Labor categories.
