A. One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service:
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education
Substitution of education may not be used in lieu of specialized experience for this grade level.

As a WRITER-EDITOR at the GS-1082-13 some of your typical work assignments may include:
- Collecting and analyzing facts about topics of editorial and human interest through interviews, research and observation to develop and write stories for the Defense Department's flagship website, defense.gov.
- Conducting in-depth interviews in person or via virtual means for printing stories or short videos.
- Applying AP style to provide/gathered informative materials and subject matter expert input to write comprehensive news and feature articles in a timely manner.
- Applying basic knowledge of Photoshop or similar image-editing software to view photos and image metadata and perform minor editing such as cropping.
- Occasionally (less than 20% of assignments) photographing news events such as press briefings, public remarks and site visits in support of your own written coverage.
- Applying basic knowledge of word-processing and file-sharing software to write and submit written stories and photographs to reviewers or editors for publication.
- Providing written coverage of newsworthy events of importance to the Defense Department, to include press briefings and other media events, conferences, panel discussions and symposiums.
- Coordinating with public affairs professionals and subject matter experts to obtain interviews in support of human-interest stories and news articles.
- Writing and editing content associated with photo and video content, including articles, blogs and news and feature stories, ensuring they are accurate, complete and written to the highest standard in terms of style and mechanics.
- Maintaining a strong working knowledge of current Defense Department priorities and communication objectives.
- Adhering to process procedures and moving content through the workflow in a timely manner.
- Working as sole writer on a rotating basis after duty hours and on weekends and holidays.
- Traveling with senior DoD leaders on or independently in support of enterprise projects.

- Producing/curating photo and video content to accompany news, features and online articles and standalone images for the flagship website for the Defense Department.
- Developing and monitoring short- and long-range plans for news and feature stories, information products, online magazine articles and images.
- Using advanced multimedia video capabilities, still photography and news and feature writing to tell stories.
- Advanced experience in writing with minimal supervision about major defense topics from a national, strategic perspective.
