Job Description

The Weapon Physics and Design (WPD) Program has an opening for a Program Group Leader (PGL) to lead and manage the Modeling Suites (MS) Program Group within Integrated Weapon Science (IWS). The MS PGL will lead the portfolio of performance modeling suites, which comprise a broad range of suite size, complexity, and computational requirements. The suites are used extensively by designers for uncertainty quantification (UQ), verification & validation (V&V) studies, and to support assessment and certification efforts for the stockpile. The suites provide a large set of experimental simulations, a common modeling methodology that provides standard practices, and workflow tools to enable improved understanding of weapon physics. The MS PGL will be responsible for ensuring alignment of the suites with program priorities, coordinating common development across the suites, and ensuring development and integration of next-generation suite capabilities, as well as ensuring continued operational reliability. This position is a 60% role and 40% will need to be covered by another project at LLNL. This position will report programmatically to the Associate Program Director for Integrated Weapon Science (IWS) within the WPD program in the Strategic Deterrence (SD) Directorate.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

This position may offer a hybrid schedule, which includes the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week, after a probationary period. The specifics of the hybrid schedule, including the exact number of days required in the office and virtual work options, may vary based on the needs of the team and the organization.

In this role, you will
  • Provide leadership, technical direction, foster coordination, and communication, to maintain a positive team dynamic amongst the respective suite leads.
  • Ensure evolution of the suites and associated capabilities in alignment with WPD strategic goals.
  • Interface with a broad range of users of suites from across the Laboratory to determine user access lists and gather input on suite development needs to deliver advances in performance modeling.
  • Work in close partnership with Weapon Simulation and Computing (WSC) to build a shared awareness of strategic code development priorities and challenges.
  • Annually develop long-term program plan priorities and staffing and track throughout the year.
  • Manage the MS budget and report monthly on project execution status.
  • Contribute technically to make improvements and advancements to the MS program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities at SEL.5
  • Act as senior technical expert to the WPD community on suite development and code capability requirements.

  • Significant experience with multi-physics modeling and simulation with expert knowledge of design practices and familiarity with SD, WPD, and the LLNL weapon-physics programs.
  • Significant experience teaming and partnering effectively to lead cross-disciplinary and cross-laboratory teams to work toward programmatic and institutional goals.
  • Familiarity with one or more WPD suites or equivalent experience and knowledge.
  • Highly advanced problem solving, analytical, technical, organizational, and management skills necessary to independently advise, recommend, and approve appropriate actions and implement solutions.
  • Expert communication skills, both written and verbal, necessary to effectively explain, present, negotiate, advise, and influence all levels of management.
  • Experience fostering productive relationships with other divisions, directorates, laboratories, institutions across the DOE.

Additional qualification at the SEL.5 level
  • Expert knowledge of multi-physics modeling and weapon simulation and familiarity with SD, WPD, and the LLNL weapon-physics programs.
  • Extensive experience teaming and partnering effectively to build, lead, and motivate cross-disciplinary and cross-laboratory teams to work toward programmatic and institutional goals.
  • Demonstrated expert communication, facilitation, interpersonal, and collaboration skills necessary to influence and advise senior management and the weapon design community.
