Tyto Athene is searching for a Lab Architect - Senior for an opportunity supporting U.S. Southern Command. Positions are located both CONUS/OCONUS at the SOUTHCOM HQ in Doral, FL, and at the TSOC and other locations abroad (GTMO, Honduras, Colombia etc.).
The Senior Lab Architect is responsible for the design, development, and oversight of complex lab environments that support testing, evaluation, integration, and development of mission critical systems and solutions for USSOUTHCOM. This role demands deep expertise in enterprise IT architecture, cybersecurity, virtualization, and lab automation within secure and mission critical environments.

The Senior Lab Architect is responsible for the design, development, and oversight of complex lab environments that support testing, evaluation, integration, and development of mission critical systems and solutions for USSOUTHCOM. This role demands deep expertise in enterprise IT architecture, cybersecurity, virtualization, and lab automation within secure and mission critical environments.
Responsibilities:
- Design scalable, secure, and resilient lab environments supporting test, integration, and development for mission-critical USSOUTHCOM systems
- Define and document architectural blueprints, lab topology, data flows, and test cases
- Lead the integration of physical and virtual assets, including network, storage, compute, and application services in the laboratory
- Coordinate with cybersecurity engineers to ensure lab environments meet DoD Risk Management Framework (RMF) and STIG compliance
- Implement automation for lab provisioning, monitoring, and configuration management using tools like Ansible, Terraform, or Puppet
- Guide teams of system administrators, engineers, and test personnel during lab setup and validation efforts
- Support lab-based exercises, evaluations, and technical demonstrations
- Interface with vendors and OEMs to validate hardware/software requirements
- Manage lifecycle and refresh strategies for lab infrastructure components
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to lab staff and junior engineers
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Computer Engineering, or related field
- 10+ years of experience in IT systems engineering or lab environment design
- Proven expertise in virtualization technologies
- Strong background in networking, storage, and cybersecurity controls
- Experience designing and managing hybrid cloud or on-prem lab environements
- Knowledge of system hardening practices, STIG implementation, and RMF process
- Excellent documentation, communication, and leadership skills
Desired:
- Master's degree in related field
- Familiarity with DevSecOps pipelines and toolchains (GitLab, Jenkins, Docker, etc.)
- Experience working with classified and isolated lab networks
- Familiarity with Agile and DoD-acquisition processes
- Background in supporting test events and DoD interoperability assessments (e.g., JITC, DISA)
- Microsoft Certified Azure Solutions Architect Expert
- Cisco Certified Network Professional
- ITIL v4 Foundations
Clearance:
- TS/SCI clearance required
Certification:
- DoD 8570 Baseline & CE certifications are required for all positions and may vary slightly depending on the skillset required to perform the role
- CompTIA Security+ CE
- CISSP
- VMware Certified Professional or higher
