Tyto Athene is searching for a Technical Writer - Journeyman to support U.S. Southern Command on the SCITES II Contract in Doral, Florida. Positions are located both CONUS/OCONUS at the SOUTHCOM HQ in Doral, FL, and at the TSOC and other locations abroad (GTMO, Honduras, Colombia etc.).
The Journeyman Technical Writer manages the writing and editing of technical documents such as procedure manuals, user guides, and operational specifications to communicate technical information to a wide range of audiences. Working closely with engineering and IT teams, this position helps convert complex technical content into digestible manuals, SOPs, and reference materials in alignment with DoD standards.

The Journeyman Technical Writer manages the writing and editing of technical documents such as procedure manuals, user guides, and operational specifications to communicate technical information to a wide range of audiences. Working closely with engineering and IT teams, this position helps convert complex technical content into digestible manuals, SOPs, and reference materials in alignment with DoD standards.
Responsibilities:
- Acquires subject knowledge through interviews, production observations, and reviewing technical specifications and blueprints
- Oversees the preparation of illustrative materials, selecting appropriate drawings, diagrams, and charts
- Conducts quality reviews to validate accuracy and clarity of content. Translates complex data into accessible text for publications like technical journals, user manuals, and websites
- Gathers information from research, interviews, and reports to develop comprehensive documents
- Manages records, files, and electronic archives for publications
- Assists in preparing materials for technical seminars and business forums, contributing to the selection of graphics and illustrations to meet publication goals
- Compiles monthly status reports (MSR) and coordinates file transfers as required
- Supports the development of the Interface Control Document (ICD) and updates it as necessary, accurately documenting system interfaces
- Prepares training materials and presentations for user training sessions
Qualifications
Required:
- Associate's degree in English, Communications, Informaiton Technology or related field
- 4-9 years of technical experience supporting IT, cybersecurity, or engineering efforts
- Proficient in MS Word, PowerPoint, and basic graphic editing tools
- Familiarity with DoD documentation standards and terminology
- Ability to work collabratively with technical and non-technical team members
Desired:
- Bachelor's degree in related field
- Experience supporting government contracts or military systems
- Familiarity with Agile development or DevSecOps environments
- CompTIA Security+ or ITIL v4 Foundations
Clearance:
- Secret clearance required with the ability to obtain a TS/SCI
Certification:
- DoD 8570 Baseline & CE certifications are required for all positions and may vary slightly depending on the skillset required to perform the role
