We are seeking an Instrumentation Technician with experience in configuring, troubleshooting, and operating Linux-based maritime instrumentation systems. The role will involve field deployments, testing, maintenance, and recovery of maritime sensing systems and buoys, primarily on Lake Superior and occasionally at other sites. During the off-season, responsibilities will shift to supporting the production and assembly of additional systems.

This is a hands-on, dynamic role that requires technical expertise, field readiness, and collaboration with engineering teams. The ideal candidate will be tech-savvy with a focus on computers and data, complementing a second team member with a mechanical and electrical focus.

Key Responsibilities:
Testing: Perform shop and field testing of components, subsystems, and complete systems using limited documentation.

Troubleshooting: Diagnose and repair issues on deployed systems, both in-shop and in the field. Collaborate with engineers to improve system documentation.

Field Operations: Participate in deployment, maintenance, and recovery of instrumentation systems from small boats.

Training & Documentation: Help develop training materials for new operators and potentially support the training of military personnel.

Engineering Support: Provide hands-on feedback to engineers on system design, maintainability, reliability, and documentation.

Production Support: Assist with fabrication and assembly of new system components during non-deployment seasons.

Minimum Qualifications:
Strong attention to detail, commitment to safety, and focus on quality.

Proficient verbal and written communication skills.

Demonstrated experience testing and verifying system performance against expected results.

Linux and network administration experience.

Willingness and ability to participate in at-sea operations from small vessels.

Physically able to lift, carry, and maneuver equipment on small boats; perform fine manual tasks in field settings.

U.S. citizenship and eligibility to obtain a SECRET security clearance (sponsorship provided).

USCG captain’s license or substantial small boat operation experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
Extensive maritime operations experience, including small boat handling, field repair, and logistics support.

Basic Python programming ability.

Familiarity with mechanical fabrication: additive manufacturing, machining, composites, welding, and assembly.

Experience with electrical fabrication: wire harnesses, PCB population and repair, battery packs.

Veteran status or comfort working alongside military personnel (enlisted and commissioned).

If you’re excited about working on real-world maritime systems in a mission-driven environment with hands-on impact and variety, we’d love to speak with you. This is a full-time, in-person role based in Duluth, MN, with occasional travel. Competitive pay, strong benefits, and opportunities for growth are included.
