Description:

The Visa Specialist works in the Office of the Legal Adviser, Bureau of Consular Affairs, Visa Services (L/CA/V). Within L/CA/V, the Visa Specialist supports a team of attorneys who provide legal opinions to consular officers adjudicating visa applications at consular posts worldwide and litigation support to the Department of Justice on visa refusals being challenged in federal courts. The Visa Specialist monitors and administers a public-facing email box, which annually receives thousands of inquiries from applicants, petitioners, and their attorneys regarding the application of U.S. immigration law to visa applications adjudicated by consular officers at U.S. embassies and consulates. A government team-lead will provide day-to-day oversight and direction.

Job Duties:
  • Effectively and professionally interface with everyone from high-ranking public officials to the general public
  • Provide accurate and appropriate descriptions of visa cases, visa processing procedures, and visa ineligibilities under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA)
  • Work closely with attorneys to coordinate responses on complex legal issues
  • Review LegalNet inquiries and coordinate responses with management at consular posts abroad and the Visa Office
  • Provide litigation support as needed
  • Assist, if tasked, in formulating, running, or assisting in management of special projects, case trackers, training, or other assignments

Qualifications:
  • Working knowledge of U.S. immigration law, the Immigration and Nationality Act, the Foreign Affairs Manual and Department of State procedures
  • Previous experience with the U.S. visa process preferred
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and comfortable working on a high-volume portfolio that demands accurate and strict attention to detail in drafting correspondence
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Experience creating, storing, and updating documents with the full suite of Microsoft products: MS Word, MS Power Point, MS SharePoint, MS Excel, MS Outlook.
