The successful candidate will be part of the KBR team supporting the Test Resource Management Center's (TRMC) Big Data (BD) and Knowledge Management (KM) Team working on BD and KM systems supporting DoD Test Ranges and various acquisition programs. The successful candidate will support our customers with insights gained from analyzing DoD Test & Evaluation data. The ideal candidate is adept at collaborating with technical and non-technical stakeholders to identify analytic requirements and analysis questions that can be informed through the aggregation and analysis of large data sets collected during test events or exercises. The candidate should be skilled at identifying opportunities for process or workflow optimization. The candidate should have experience using a variety of methods and models to test the effectiveness of different courses of action. They must have strong experience using a variety of data mining and data analysis methods, accessing data stored in a variety of data storage paradigms, developing models using common statistical and machine learning modeling approaches, using and creating custom algorithms, implementing analysis workflows in Python or R, and writing reports and documentation. They must have a proven ability to drive decisions through successful communication, in written or presented form, of their data-based insights. They must be comfortable working with a wide range of stakeholders and functional teams. Candidates should have a passion for discovering insights hidden in large data sets and working with stakeholders to improve business outcomes through the delivery of high-quality products. The successful candidate will have extensive technical expertise in data science, academic or industry experience, and have excellent communication skills.

Key Responsibilities:

• As a Data Scientist, you will be a critical part of the team that is responsible for enabling the development of data-driven decision analysis products through the innovative application, and promotion, of novel methods from data science, machine learning, and operations research to provide robust and flexible testing and evaluation capabilities to support DoD modernization.
• You will be part of a technical team responsible for providing analytic consulting services, supporting analytic workflow and product development and testing, promoting the user adoption of methods and best practices from data science, conducting applied methods projects, and supporting the creation of analysis-ready data.
• When supporting sites, you will be the face of the CHEETAS Team and will be responsible for ensuring stakeholders have the analytical tools, data products and reports they need to make insightful recommendations based on your data driven analysis.
• You will be directly assisting both analyst / technical and non-analyst / non-technical stakeholders with the analysis of DoD datasets and demonstrating the ' art of the possible ' to the stakeholders and VIPs with insights gained from your analysis of DoD Test and Evaluation (T&E) data.
• As such this position requires the ability to effectively communicate at both a programmatic and technical level.
• Although you potentially may be the only team member physically on-site supporting you will not be alone.
• You will have reach-back support from other members of the data science team as well as the software engineering and system administration teams.
• While onsite, you will be responsible for running and operating CHEETAS ( and other tools ); demonstrating these tools to stakeholders & VIPs; conveying analysis results; adapting internally-developed tools, notebooks and reports to meet emerging needs; gathering use cases, requirements, gaps and needs from stakeholders and for larger development items providing that information as feature requests or bug reports to the CHEETAS development team; and performing impromptu hands-on training sessions with end users and potentially troubleshooting problems from within closed networks without internet access ( with support from distributed team members ).
• Successful candidates must be self-motivated and capable of working independently with little supervision / direct tasking.
• Data Scientists with 10+ years of DoD experience are welcome to apply. However, our preference is for candidates with 15+ years of DoD experience with strong weight placed on PhD level candidates.

Work Environment:

• Location: When not supporting a site, this position can work remotely or from a nearby KBR office (if available and desired).

• Travel Requirements: 25% with potential surge to 50% to support end users located at various DoD ranges & labs located across the US (including Alaska and Hawaii).

Qualifications:

Required:

• Active Secret Security Clearance.
• Applicants should possess a curiosity to explore data and possess a strong desire to learn new methods.
• This position requires an advanced degree in operations research, engineering, applied math, statistics, or computer science with 15+ years of hands-on experience within DoD. Candidates with 10-15 years of DoD experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Entry level candidates will not be considered.
• Previous experience should include working with end users, gathering requirements and developing data analysis tools or products to meet user needs and address analysis questions.
• Previous experience should include developing and interpreting the results of analytic products with DoD specific data types and large volumes of data.
• Previous experience should demonstrate a foundation in the appropriate application of quantitative methods from areas such as statistics, machine learning, operations research, and computational methods to provide analytic insights to challenging problems.
• Previous experience should demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental challenges associated with application of computational methods to large data sets and a familiarity with modern technologies and architectures required to conduct analysis at scale.
• Previous experience should demonstrate competency in data modeling, data wrangling, as well as the processes associated with extraction, transformation, and loading of data into modern databases.
• Previous experience using R and Python to engineer features, conduct analysis, visualize results, and build interactive analytic or decision support tools.
• Experience using scripting languages (Python and R) to process, analyze and visualize data.
• Experience using notebooks (Jupyter Notebooks and RMarkdown) to create reproducible and explainable products.
• Experience using interactive visualization tools (RShiny, pyShiny, Dash) to create interactive analytics.
• Experience generating and presenting reports, visualizations and findings to customers.
• Experience using analysis methods, including supervised and unsupervised methods, to work with time series and geospatial data.
• Experience working with Windows, Linux, and containers.
• Experience querying databases using SQL and working with distributed storage and computing environments to conduct analysis (Spark, Trino, Hadoop, Hive, Neo4J, JanusGraph, MongoDB, Accumulo, HBase as examples).
• Experience working with code repositories in a collaborative team.
• Ability to make insightful recommendations based on data driven analysis and customer interactions.
• Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing with customers and teammates.
• Ability to speak and present findings in front of large technical and non-technical groups.
• Ability to create documentation and repeatable procedures to enable reproducible research.
• Ability to create training and educational content for novice end users on the use of tools and novel analytic methods.
• Self-motivated to design, develop, enhance, reengineer or integrate software applications to improve the quality of data outputs available for end users.
• Knowledge of methods from operations research, statistical and machine learning, data science, and computer science sufficient to select appropriate methods for novel analysis problems and defend their use.
• Knowledge of computer programming concepts, data structures and storage architectures, to include relational and non-relational databases, distributed computing frameworks, and modeling and simulation experimentation sufficient to inform selection of appropriate methods when working on novel problems in these areas.

• Top Secret Security Clearance.

• Preference given to PhD level applicants.

Basic Compensation: $150k - $226k (For Patuxent River, MD Area Only)
The offered rate will be based on the selected candidate's knowledge, skills, abilities and/or experience and in consideration of internal parity.

Additional Compensation:

KBR may offer bonuses, commissions, or other forms of compensation to certain job titles or levels, per internal policy or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be in the form of sign on bonus, relocation benefits, short term incentives, long term incentives, or discretionary payments for exceptional performance.
