Operations & Maintenance System Engineer
Vandenberg Space Force Base in Lompoc, CA

Summary:

Operations & Maintenance (O&M) System Engineer will work providing support, to include site operations & installation support, schedule development for specific operations, launch support and system engineering and integration as required. The System Engineer will also perform the same job duties as the technicians in support of daily operations and general customer required support at other customer sites as required.


Functions:
• Work as a team member in coordination with the Special Aerospace Services personnel.
• Engineer and implement specific customer requested in-scope installation or update jobs to be completed by the Special Aerospace Services workforce (coordinated with the O&M Manager) per customer direction and walk-down determinations.
• Coordinate daily site work activities with appropriate responsible customer scheduling, engineering and safety personnel, attend daily site general schedule information meetings as required.
• Construct, install, modify, refurbish, and perform preventive maintenance and repair of the operational voice, video, administrative telephone, public address, CCTV, CATV, timing, serial data, missile lift-off (MLO).
• Inspect and test operability of communications equipment prior to major operations and launch
• Configure communication systems to support pre-launch and launch activities
• Install, troubleshoot, and repair fiber and copper cabling and associated hardware.
• Install and modify metal conduit for copper and fiber cabling paths, including knowledge of bending and methods of attachment.
• Climb and work on towers, ladders, man-lifts, or other support structures and understand need and use of personal fall protection equipment.
• Work in confined spaces such as trenches, tunnels and crawl spaces and understand need and use of gas detection equipment.
• Must complete annual site-specific orientation and safety courses required by customer to maintain access to all work location areas.
• Must complete annual Fall Protection and Confined Space Entrant & Attendant safety courses, and other training specified by Special Aerospace Services management.
• Operate various electronic testing equipment to conduct service tests on lines and equipment. I.e. T1 Test sets, Network test sets, Oscilloscopes, DMV, OTDR and optical power meter. Teach or review the use of various test equipment to technicians as needed to enhance performance of required job duties.
• Assist repair personnel from other agencies to test lines, circuits and systems, isolate and clear cable faults, and verify records.
• Work with other agencies, internal and external, to troubleshoot and isolate problems.

Skills Required:

• Possess a high level of independent judgment, self-directed, good leader.
• Must be able to work well with others as well as alone to accomplish assigned work.
• Minimum of (10) years of space launch related technical support experience
• Customer required level of security clearance
• Advanced electronics and system integration knowledge as it applies to launch communications related systems.
• Complete understanding of use of communications industry and electronics test equipment, ability to teach or assist others in proper and effective use various test equipment to troubleshoot various communication equipment issues.
• Must be able to work with standard hand and power tools related to low-voltage communications industries and able to instruct others on proper and safe use.
• Working knowledge of LAN/WAN topologies, copper and fiber cabling standards and components
• Ability to work extended hours (overtime/weekends) as required
• Clean driving record and Clean DOJ/FBI record
• OSHA 10 safety training certification minimum, OSHA 30 preferable
• Strong verbal and written communications skills
• Strong Computer skills: Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Visio
• Ability to read, understand and work from system drawings and equipment documentation for the purpose of troubleshooting system problems and completion of projects.
• Ability to generate and modify/update the various comm system documentation, drawings and test plans.
• Ability to understand and implement complex voice communications system configurations for launch operations.

Physical Requirements:
While performing regular job duties, the system engineer may be required to stand, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, reach with hands and arms in a safe manner. While performing regular job duties, you may frequently be required to walk, sit and use hands to pull cables and wires, use power tools, work in awkward positions and climb ladders. Furthermore, there are situations where you may be required to use a Man lift. The employee must be able to safely lift and/or move up to 75 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distant vision and color vision. The noise levels in the work environment is moderate to loud and proper PPE will be provided when required. You may be exposed to inclement weather at times.
