Canine Trainer
Certifications
Shall possess, or obtain via completion of a Government-supplied program of instruction, qualifications in the following areas:
- Rope operations
- Third Class Swim Qualification
- NSW MPC medical care
- Shall possess or obtain via completion of a Government-supplied program of instruction the following certifications within thirty days of contract award:
- Class C or military vehicle equivalent driver’s license
- Explosives handling and transportation personnel qualification and certification in accordance with OPNAVINST 8023.24B.
- All government supplied certifications listed above not previously held must be obtained within the first 6 months of employment.
Training
Successful completion of the following courses:
- Canine handler course
- Canine handler instructor course
- Acceptable courses are those recognized by the following organizations:
- Department of Defense
- Department of Homeland Security
- American Working Dog Association
- North American Police Work Dog Association
- International Police Work Dog Association
Experience
Shall meet at least one of the following categories for experience:
- EITHER shall have a minimum of five years’ experience within the past seven years of direct hands-on training of both handlers and canines in all of the following areas:
Tactical obedience
Explosives detection (on and off leash)
Bite work/Patrol (on and off leash)
Tracking (urban and rural)
OR shall have a minimum of one years’ experience in the above and at least four years as a canine handler assigned to a USSOCOM unit.
Documentation
2.4.1 Copies of certificates to prove successful completion of all required courses.
2.4.2 Contractor shall submit a resume for the CT that details the following information:
2.4.2.1 Hands-on canine and handler training detailed to the month level and broken out by category (tactical obedience, explosives detection, bite work/patrol, tracking, maritime, and infiltration).
2.4.2.2 USSOCOM unit canine handler experience detailed to the month level and broken out by category (training and deployment)
2.5 Primary/Unique Duties
2.5.1 Perform standardized MPC and canine puppy training:
2.5.1.1 Initial training to prepare MPCs to join an MPC Team and be utilized during a Handler Course
2.5.1.2 Sustainment training for MPCs
2.5.1.3 Initial training to prepare canine puppies for MPC selection.
2.5.2 Perform independently or supervise the MPC Handler execution of the MPC and canine puppy physical conditioning program to include rehabilitation.
2.5.3 Provide evaluation, appropriate initial stabilization, and transportation for MPC and puppy illness and injury.
2.5.4 Provide initial training and sustainment training to all MPC Handler and MPC Teams to perform all NSW MPC Team capabilities.
2.5.5 Train military personnel with or without canine experience to handle an MPC and perform all NSW MPC Team capabilities.
2.5.6 Prepare a student to pass an end-of-course scenario-based evaluation of all NSW MPC Team capabilities.
2.5.7 Prepare and/or perform classroom and hands-on training.
2.5.8 Prepare and/or give student briefings for safety briefs and training overviews via Microsoft programs such as PowerPoint, Excel, or Word as needed.
2.5.9 Perform and return to the Government weekly evaluation of students and provide recommendations to MPC program personnel on Government supplied templates.
2.5.10 Perform & return to the Government the Hander Course Evaluation and provide recommendations to MPC program personnel on Government supplied templates.
2.5.11 Provide remedial MPC or student training and re-evaluation as necessary.
2.5.12 Travel to training locations, set up MPC Team training, and provide training and evaluation services throughout the pre-deployment training cycle.
2.5.13 All training, care, and evaluations will be documented on Government supplied templates and returned to the Government.
