Overview:
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Health and Safety (H&S) Professional to join our Safety and Operations Services Division. This position will focus on providing safety and industrial hygiene (IH) support for operations and maintenance, as well as research and development (R&D) activities conducted within ORNL's High Flux Isotope Reactor. This position has a key role in identifying, evaluating, and controlling workplace hazards while ensuring compliance with regulatory standards in a fast-paced and dynamic research environment. The position offers the opportunity to work with cutting-edge science and technology while ensuring a safe working environment.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Safety and IH Support- Provide professional safety and industrial hygiene support and oversight for R&D, facility operations, and maintenance activities within a Hazard Category 1 nuclear facility.
- Collaboration- Build and maintain a cooperative and cohesive environment between H&S, Maintenance, Operations, and Research staff to ensure smooth collaboration and effective safety practices.
- Hazard Identification- Evaluate R&D activities, facilities, operations tasks, and internal procedures to identify hazards, recommend controls, and verify the effectiveness of those controls as work progresses.
- Exposure Assessments- Conduct qualitative and quantitative exposure assessments of chemical and physical hazards using comprehensive industrial hygiene practices and equipment.
- Safe Conduct of Research- Abide by and promote the Battelle Safe Conduct of Research principles, ensuring safe operations, raising safety concerns, and fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
- Regulatory Support- Provide technical support in applying regulatory requirements, procedures, and standards under 10 CFR 851, the DOE Worker Safety and Health Program.
- Operational Efficiency and Safety Culture- Continually seek ways to increase operational efficiencies, improve safety culture, and champion initiatives to support the research mission.
- Compliance and Effectiveness- Participate in assessments to verify compliance with safety programs and evaluate their effectiveness.
- Qualified Health and Safety Professional (QHSP) Role- Perform or support the roles of QHSP and Human and Organizational Performance Improvement Practitioner.
- Event Reviews and Causal Analysis- Facilitate or participate in event critiques, causal analyses, and corrective action plan development.
- Integrated Safety Management- Assist in implementing Integrated Safety Management (ISM) into work planning and execution processes with interdisciplinary teams.
- Procurement Review- Review procurement and subcontract activities to ensure safety, environmental, and operational requirements are met.
- Procedure Development- Participate in the review and development of division or directorate-level procedures and guidelines as needed.

Basic Qualifications:
- A BS degree in health and safety, industrial hygiene, chemistry, biology, engineering, operations, etc. or a related discipline with a minimum of 5 years of experience in safety and health or a MS degree with 4 years relevant experience.
- Experience in field oversight/assessment of industrial hygiene/industrial safety performance and compliance.
- In-depth knowledge of compliance with OSHA, local, state, and federal industrial hygiene and safety standards and regulations.
- Strong background in chemical/material identification and evaluation, as well as experience in hazard analysis and exposure assessment activities.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Security Clearance.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in H&S oversight and work planning of complex facility operations and maintenance activities, including radiological or nuclear facilities.
- Proven ability to work effectively as part of a team in a dynamic, multi-discipline, multi-tasking environment that requires interfacing with management, maintenance personnel, researchers, facility users/visitors, and operations staff.
- Technical knowledge of IH instrumentation including calibration, usage, limitations, and calculations/interpretations of results.
- Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Strong ability to work independently, under pressure, with effective problem-solving skills.
- Ability to prioritize work and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Strong organizational and time management skills and ability to meet inflexible deadlines on own initiative.
- Professional certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), and/or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) are preferred. Certified Laser Safety Officer (CLSO), Certified Chemical Engineer (CCE), or Certified Hazardous Material Manager (CHMM) may be considered provided the candidate has relevant experience.
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced work environment, adapt to changing priorities, and accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines.
Special Requirements:
- Q Clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
- Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
