Where you'll work:
This fully remote opportunity allows you the flexibility to work from home in support of Epsilon's USDA DISC Customer.

Our Customer's Mission:
The USDA Digital Infrastructure Services Center (DISC) operates 24/7/365 to provide comprehensive on premises and cloud-based hosting services, including Disaster Recovery, security, and professional support services and operations to approximately 35 federal organizations. The USDA and other Federal partners depend upon DISC's highly complex and interconnected technology infrastructure to conduct their operations. To better support this mission, DISC is modernizing their technology by transitioning to a continuous integration, deployment, and code-based organization.

An average day:
As Backup and Recovery Engineer III, you will provide engineering and operational support for enterprise backup and recovery systems, focusing on on-premise and cloud-based backup solutions, and integration with modern automation platforms. This position will manage and optimize backup infrastructure, troubleshoot restore operations, ensure compliance through patching and vulnerability management, and contribute to automation and documentation initiatives. In this position you will:
  • Provide 24x7/365 remote support services and on-premises facility response as needed.
  • Manage and support backup operations across on-premise and cloud environments (Azure, AWS, GCP, OCI), including host configurations, decommissions, and restore requests.
  • Monitor the health and performance of the on-premise backup infrastructure, investigate issues, coordinate hardware replacements, and engage vendor support as needed.
  • Analyze backup job results and ensure successful execution across all supported platforms; assist with complex restore scenarios in collaboration with internal and external technical teams.
  • Maintain and optimize cloud-based backup solutions, including Commvault (Metallic), by resolving configuration, reporting, and connectivity challenges.
  • Design and implement automation improvements using Bash, Python, and Ansible; maintain code and configuration standards through version-controlled repositories (e.g., Git).
  • Apply patches and software upgrades to backup systems; address vulnerability findings and manage SSL certificate renewals across distributed environments.
  • Document system changes, participate in change management processes, and contribute to post-incident reviews and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Stay current with industry best practices in backup, recovery, and data protection, and provide knowledge transfer and operational documentation.
Basic Qualifications:
  • As a requirement of this position, all candidates must be a U.S. Citizen. In accordance with 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(2)(C) , Epsilon will not consider candidates for this position who do not meet the aforementioned conditions.
  • 5+ years of experience with enterprise backup systems, preferably Cohesity v6.x and/or CommVault (Metallic)
  • Experience with agentless VM backups (VMware, Nutanix) and physical/virtual database backups (Oracle, MySQL, SQL, DB2)
  • Strong scripting skills in Bash or Python
  • Experience with Ansible Automation Platform or Ansible Tower
  • Familiarity with Linux system administration
  • Experience integrating backup platforms with APIs for on-prem and cloud deployments
  • Experience managing SSL certificate lifecycles and IPMI interfaces across large node environments
  • Hands-on experience with incident, problem, and change management processes
  • Ability to manage multiple projects effectively and efficiently with varying deadlines and levels of importance
  • Proven ability to lead efforts of analysis and resolution of problems or issues and convey complex problems with recommended course action
  • Experience and comfort with change and ambiguity
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in the English language. All contractor employees must be able to read, write, speak and understand English.
  • Contractor personnel performing in a leadership capacity shall be capable of directing contractor personnel and interfacing with the Government and customers.
  • Exceptional customer service skills.
  • Strong time-management and prioritization skills.
  • Ability to communicate applicable technical subject matter expertise to management and others.
  • DISC follows the IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) service operation best practices. It is important for the employees to demonstrate experience based on ITIL framework:
    • ITIL v4 foundation Certification Required within 6 months of hire.
    • Ability to apply and provide feedback on service operation model and practices.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with commercial cloud storage (e.g., AWS S3, Azure Blob, GCP)
  • Working knowledge of Commvault (Metallic)
  • Integration experience with VMware, Kubernetes, Ansible, and backup platforms
  • Strong understanding of backup security, compliance, and recovery planning
Other Requirements:
  • Must be able to pass federal background investigation and obtain a Public Trust. ( This is a federal contract position and requires candidates to obtain and maintain the appropriate level of Security Clearance or Public Trust. Adjudication of the required Security Clearance or Public Trust is determined solely by the government. If the government determines that the candidate cannot obtain and/or maintain the appropriate level of Security Clearance or Public Trust, Epsilon will be unable to place the candidate in this position.)
