The Global Respiratory Viruses Branch (GRVB) within the Center for Outbreak Response and Vaccine Development (CORVD) is seeking a highly experienced Senior Epidemiologist - Subject Matter Expert to lead technical oversight, data management, and epidemiologic analysis for COVID-19 and global respiratory virus surveillance projects. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in epidemiologic methods, data systems, public health research, and global partnerships-particularly in collaboration with Ministries of Health and international organizations across Latin America and other regions.

This senior-level position will serve as a key technical leader and point-of-contact for GRVB's surveillance activities, including outbreak response, study design, data analysis, capacity building, and publication development.

Senior Epidemiologist - Subject Matter Expert Responsibilities Include:
  • Technical Oversight & Data Management
    • Lead and coordinate the collection, management, and analysis of data for COVID-19 and other respiratory virus surveillance investigations.
    • Develop, review, and revise study protocols, questionnaires, data collection tools, and analytical documentation.
    • Provide technical and quality assurance support to ensure data accuracy, consistency, and integrity.
    • Maintain Institutional Review Board (IRB) approvals for human subjects research and assist collaborators with protocol development and submission.
  • Epidemiological Analysis & Programming
    • Conduct advanced analyses using SAS, R, and other statistical software; apply complex methods including multivariate modeling, logistic regression, survival analysis, and survey data analysis.
    • Write and troubleshoot statistical code; develop clean, well-documented analytical datasets.
    • Guide the design and analysis of cohort, case-control, and cross-sectional studies; assist with sample size calculations and power analyses.
    • Use SUDAAN, R, or equivalent tools for analyzing survey and complex sample design data.
    • Assist in developing data dashboards and visualizations; ensure alignment with CDC data modernization efforts.
  • Global Health Surveillance & Partnerships
    • Represent GRVB in meetings, calls, and collaborative initiatives supporting CORVD's global health surveillance goals.
    • Serve as the primary technical liaison to Ministries of Health in South and Central America, and other regions as needed.
    • Provide strategic technical support to external partners (e.g., PAHO, UCSF, TEPHINET) and internal USG partners (e.g., CDC country/regional offices, embassies).
    • Guide and coordinate surveillance activities across GRVB teams focused on the Americas region.
    • Support the development and implementation of training on sentinel surveillance, event-based surveillance, universal surveillance, and RSV burden estimation.
  • Emergency Response & Communication
    • Support emergency outbreak response efforts both domestically and internationally.
    • Develop scientific reports, briefings, presentations, data summaries, and peer-reviewed manuscripts.
    • Prepare and present data findings clearly to internal CDC staff, global partners, and other stakeholders.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned


Senior Epidemiologist - Subject Matter Expert Experience, Education, Skills, Abilities requested:
  • Ph.D. or DrPH in Epidemiology, Public Health, Biostatistics, or a related field strongly preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in applied epidemiology, including international public health surveillance and research.
  • Proficiency in SAS, R, SUDAAN, and data management tools such as DCIPHER or similar platforms.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing and analyzing large datasets from surveillance systems or outbreak investigations.
  • Expertise in working with human subjects research protocols and navigating IRB procedures.
  • Experience collaborating with Ministries of Health, global NGOs, and multilateral partners (e.g., PAHO, WHO, CDC country offices).
  • Strong scientific writing skills, including experience leading peer-reviewed publications and reports.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
    • Fluency or proficiency in Spanish or Portuguese.
    • Experience working with or within CDC, WHO, or other public health agencies.
    • Knowledge of respiratory pathogen surveillance, viral genomics, or phylodynamic modeling.
