Pay Range: $28/hour - $35/hour plus $4.57/hour (Health & Wellness bonus)

At the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division in Patuxent River, MD, SA-TECH supports the Aircraft Instrumentation Division (AID) of the Prototyping, Experimentation, and Instrumentation (PIE) Department and we are currently looking to hire an Instrumentation Technician III to provide aircraft instrumentation and hardware/software support to the Advanced Systems Group (ASG) Lab Facility. You will work with technicians and engineers on all platforms in advancing the capabilities of onboard instrumentation systems (RDTE).

This position is an instrumentation support role within the Research, Development, and Technical Leadership Branch (AD4160) ASG team. The individual in this role must be familiar with aircraft instrumentation systems and knowledgeable of the effectiveness and execution of ASG processes and operations. You must be able to manage instrumentation hardware and software configurations, demonstrate the ability to set priorities, and meet deadlines within shifting schedules. This requires knowledge of aircraft instrumentation hardware testing, configuration, and troubleshooting. To be successful in this role, you must be experienced in a wide variety of aircraft instrumentation hardware and their uses to support flight test programs. The position requires a thorough understanding of test equipment and electronics principles and experience doing solder work and other bench work related to the instrumentation field AND experience with Systems Administration would be very beneficial.

Typical duties will include (but are not limited to):
  • Responsible for the overall configuration and support of test instrumentation utilized at the Aircraft Instrumentation Division (AID). Responsible to follow all AID TSOPs (Technical Standard Operating Procedures), NAMP (Naval Aviation Maintenance Program) procedures.
  • Coordinates and directs project efforts of team members including supporting shops and laboratories, formulating and overseeing the testing of instrumentation hardware.
  • Performs tests and experiments on data acquisition systems to provide and improve existing systems, and to lay the groundwork for future engineering information on which new system selection can be based.
  • Investigates new and innovative applications of components to systems, modifies systems or components to improve performance, and manages data acquisition equipment inventory as applicable to the requirements of the larger number of users and variety of programs that are supported by the AID.
  • May represents the division in instrumentation planning meetings with engineers, contractor instrumentation and project engineers, Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIRSYSCOM), and other government agencies' technical personnel.
  • Will occasionally be required to travel to other government installations and contractor's plants to attend conferences and to conduct tests facilities other than those at NAWCAD.
  • Will be required to work with government personnel in checking performance and calibrations on advanced instrumentation systems.
  • May be asked to propose special tests where appropriate to ensure correct performance of the instrumentation.
  • Other duties as needed.
Work Conditions:
  • Conditions will vary, although most work will be performed in enclosed buildings.
  • Work will include sitting, standing, walking, lifting and reaching.
  • Must be capable of lifting 50 solo or 50-100 lbs. assisted by other employees.
  • Working hours are 6 am - 3:30 pm (0600-1530) with possible flex working hours.
  • Overtime maybe required

Requirements

Education/Experience/Skills:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Additional training (current enrollment) technical school, trade school, advanced armed services technical school, or courses at an accredited college or university in an engineering, scientific or technical curriculum desired but not required.
  • A total of five (5) years as an instrumentation technician is required for Level III; individuals with less experience may be considered for lesser levels.
  • Additionally, candidates with 1-3 years of IT experience with a focus on software deployment are preferred.
  • Familiarity with the Authority to Operate (ATO) process in federal or regulated environments is highly desirable.
  • Solid grasp of cybersecurity principles and best practices.
  • Proficiency with Windows and Linux-based systems is desired but not required).
  • Possess current soldering certification (J-STD) as well as experience in bench testing/diagnostics/test procedure writing (highly desired).
  • Practical knowledge of basic electricity and electronics, aviation maintenance fundamentals, practices and procedures, substantial knowledge of project planning, scheduling and cost estimating are required.
  • Should be familiar with, and is responsible to follow all applicable TSOPs (Technical Standard Operating Procedures) and NAMP (Naval Aviation Maintenance Program).
  • Ability to read and communicate clear and precise written or verbal instructions.
  • Technical ability to utilize electrical and electronic troubleshooting tools such as, oscilloscopes, multi-meters, watt-meters, resistance decade boxes, electrical substitution and simulation devices, time domain reflectometers, spectrum analyzers. Incumbent must have the ability to work with hand tools, torque wrenches, calipers, micrometers, crimp tools, heat guns, soldering irons.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and manufacture electrical and electronic schematics and drawings utilizing computer aided drafting software.
  • Substantial knowledge of tool inventory, and aircraft configuration and control, practices, policies and procedures.
  • Current Driver's License required; must be able to be insured through company's vehicle insurance policy while driving work/government/rental vehicles during working hours, and for the duration of employment.
  • U.S. Citizenship required and you must be able to obtain a U.S. DoD Security Secret Clearance prior to hire date and maintain a Secret clearance throughout employment.
  • All candidates will be required to pass background screening to include SSN, Driver Record, and Criminal Background Investigation.
