Northrop Grumman Mission Systems sector is seeking a Staff Atomic, Molecular, and Optical (AMO) Experimental Transformational Physicist to join our team of qualified individuals. This position is located in Woodland Hills, CA. The qualified applicant will become part of the Northrop Grumman Future Position, Navigation, and Timing Systems (FPNTS) team with a focus on quantum sensing. As a part of this team, you will support both internally funded and externally funded research and development projects and serve as a Principal Investigator (PI). These projects will range from early-stage research through to system level integration and demonstration. This position will also support the pursuit of new funding through outreach to potential customers, technical presentations, and proposal writing.

We are seeking an experimental scientist with an AMO and precision measurement experimental background with good hands-on skills and a passionate interest in the development of atomic and quantum sensors and their applications.

What You'll Get to Do:
  • Be a collaborative member and leader of a team solving interesting problems/questions.
  • Work hands-on and guide a team in the laboratory building, integrating, tuning and testing developmental sensors and systems.
  • Support customer engagements and new business development.
  • Work with and lead small teams of engineers and scientists to solve sensor/system issues or design and build new sensors/systems.
  • Communicate technical and program status information to other members of the team and management chain.
  • Present information about the research projects or technical details at conferences, customer meetings, and internal reviews.
  • Continue to learn and expand your technical breadth and depth and help other members of the team do the same through self-motivated learning and cross-training within the team.
  • Recognize when technical or programmatic challenges arise and initiate appropriate discussions to resolve issues quickly and efficiently.
  • Assist in the day-to-day operations of equipment and equipment improvements.
  • Be responsible for identifying improvements to procedures and hardware/electronics and teaching/leading a team to implement those improvements.
  • Recognize needs and help drive long-term strategies around both technology maturation and facility capabilities to support the team's work.


This position will be based out of our facility in Woodland Hills, CA. This position requires full-time work onsite with some work travel (offsite testing and demonstrations, as well as customer meetings and conferences).

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) with 12 years of relevant experience; Master's degree in STEM related field with 10 years of relevant technical experience OR PhD in STEM related field with 8 years of relevant technical experience.
  • Extensive experience with hands-on experimental physics laboratory work.
  • Extensive experience with standard laboratory instrumentation including oscilloscopes, signal analyzers, lock-in amplifiers, laser systems, fiber-optics, digital multi-meters, and or AC/DC sources.
  • Experience aligning, tuning, and locking laser systems.
  • Experience building and assembling custom laboratory equipment.
  • Experience designing and troubleshooting electronics.
  • Experience with mechanical design and fabrication.
  • Experience with vacuum equipment and ultra-high vacuum system design, construction, operation, and maintenance.
  • Experience working with alkali atoms.
  • Demonstrated strong communication skills, develop & implement technical strategies, and lead a diverse multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience leading a technical team in a Principal Investigator (PI) or similar role.
  • A demonstrated strong ability to learn new topics quickly and independently solve problems in a fast-paced environment.
  • US Citizenship
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance per customers' requirements.
  • Ability to work onsite full-time at our Woodland Hills, CA campus.


Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate should have experience that includes some of the following:
  • PhD in experimental AMO physics or related field.
  • A strong background in experimental AMO physics or related technical background with a demonstrated background for completed systems / experiments.
  • Background knowledge in mechanical, electrical, optical, and/or vacuum system design, fabrication, and operation with strong knowledge in at least one of these areas.
  • Extensive experience with standard laboratory instrumentation and equipment including oscilloscopes, signal analyzers, lock-in amplifiers, laser systems, fiber-optics, digital multi-meters, and/or AC/DC sources.
  • Excellent hands-on experience and capabilities in the lab demonstrated across multiple diverse projects.
  • Experience writing and contributing to version-controlled code in Python and/or MATLAB.
  • Experience writing successful government funding proposals.
  • Experience leading multi-disciplinary technical teams & implementing technical strategies through successful research and development projects in industry.
  • Experience with analyzing basic, complex, and large set data, including automation of data analysis.
  • Experience with modeling of atomic sensors or similar atomic systems.
  • Experience programing in LabView.
  • Active DoD Secret Clearance or higher.


Salary Range: $206,900.00 - $310,300.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
