Sierra Nevada Corporation is seeking an Senior Level Avionics Modification Technical Specialist for our Dayton, Ohio team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in avionics systems, extensive hands-on experience, and a comprehensive understanding of aircraft maintenance and troubleshooting. This role requires a detail-oriented individual with excellent problem-solving skills, capable of working independently and supports leadership with technical expertise. Must be able to coach and mentor other technicians. Expertise in repairing, maintaining, and modifying complex avionics systems and components, while ensuring FAA compliance, is essential. Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide avionics support for a diverse fleet of military and civilian aircraft, including but not limited to C-130, KC-135, C-17, KC-46, and 747-8i.
  • Work with manage and update databases for avionics systems such as Collins, Honeywell, and Garmin.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain communication, navigation, landing systems, and cabin Wi-Fi systems and subsystems, including HF/VHF/UHF comm radios, ILS, VOR, ADF, GPS, EGPWS, TAWS, TCAS, ADSB, FMS, AFCS, and Radio Altimeters.
  • Collaborate with maintenance, engineering and vendor technicians to ensure timely fixes and preventive maintenance.
  • Coordinate with other maintenance departments to resolve chronic aircraft issues.
  • Ensure compliance with FAA regulations and company standards during maintenance and troubleshooting tasks.
  • Utilize advanced avionics test equipment and tooling, including multimeters, megohmmeters, milliohm meters, oscilloscopes, frequency/time domain reflectometers, spectrum analyzers, and pitot-static test equipment.
  • Read and interpret schematic diagrams, engineering drawings, blueprints, and wiring diagrams
  • Assembly and modification of wire harnesses to include soldering and/or crimping
  • Collaborate with team members to ensure timely and quality completion of tasks
  • Follow all safety regulations and company procedures
  • Manage complex work


Qualifications You Must Have:
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent and typically 10 or more years of relevant experience
    • A higher-level degree may substitute for experience
    • Related experience may be considered in lieu of required education
  • Ability to understand and interpret moderately complex, technical schematics, diagrams, blueprints, manuals, and/or publications; ability to route wires per technical drawings
  • Advanced skills with moderately complex avionics installation tooling, wiring, wiring repair, wiring installation, soldering' and crimping techniques
  • Must have own tools in good working order
  • Candidate must be eligible to obtain and maintain a security clearance.


Qualifications We Prefer:
  • Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S) in Aviation is a plus
  • Proven experience as an Avionics Technician. Military or OJT Aviation training is a plus
  • Telecom and/or home integration training and/or experience may substitute for aviation training or experience.
  • FAA Airframe and/or Powerplant License is a plus
  • FCC Operator's Permit is a plus
  • Manufacturers/IPC/specialized Formal training is a plus such as J standard soldering, Daniels crimpers, Fiberoptic etc.
  • Aircraft Manufacturers formal familiarization (GEN FAM) training is a plus.
  • Continues improvement belts or certifications are a plus
  • Familiarity with FCC and FCC GROL
  • Ability to mentor and guide subordinates
  • Basic understanding of spectrometer, Oscilloscope and/or Pitot static equipment
  • Background in the Aerospace and Defense Industry, the US Department of Defense or US Military
