Paralegal/Legal Assistant I

About the Role:
We are seeking a highly motivated Legal Analyst to directly support the attorneys of the Department of the Navy's Disability Evaluation System Counsel Program (DESCP). This critical role provides legal research, case preparation, document analysis, and process support to ensure the highest quality legal representation for Navy and Marine Corps service members undergoing Disability Evaluation System (DES) proceedings.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide direct legal and administrative support to DESCP attorneys in case preparation and client representation.
  • Review, edit, and recommend improvements to legal correspondence, memorandums, and pleadings in accordance with Department of the Navy (DON) standards and formats.
  • Conduct in-depth legal research on state, federal, and military laws, regulations, directives, and instructions including DON and DoD policies.
  • Interpret and analyze relevant legislation, case law, and regulatory guidance to provide written legal analysis and recommendations to DESCP attorneys.
  • Prepare detailed legal memoranda, briefs, and case summaries, including chronologies of events, legal issues, and proposed actions.
  • Utilize legal research tools such as LexisNexis and Westlaw, as well as the VA's Veterans Tracking Application (VTA).
  • Develop and maintain internal databases and spreadsheets (Excel, Access) to track case statistics and support program metrics.
  • Create reports and presentations using Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint) for training sessions and outreach events.
  • Assist in client intake, appointment scheduling, calendar management, and case file organization using DESCP case management systems.
  • Support outreach and training activities by delivering briefings to attorneys and non-attorneys at DON-sponsored events.
  • Coordinate logistics, including mail processing, procurement requests, and travel arrangements for clients, attorneys, and witnesses involved in Physical Evaluation Board (PEB) proceedings.
  • Participate in witness and client interviews, identify and prepare expert witnesses, and draft legal briefs under attorney supervision.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Legal Studies, Political Science, Public Administration, or a related field (J.D. preferred but not required).
  • 2+ years of experience in a legal support or paralegal role, preferably within a military or federal legal environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of DON and DoD legal and administrative processes.
  • Exceptional legal research, writing, and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, legal research databases, and case management systems.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines independently.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Prior experience with the DES or military legal systems strongly preferred.
