Protective Security Officer – Kansas City, MO – Region 6

JOB QUALIFICATIONS AND DESCRIPTION:
• Experience requirement:
◦ Two years of armed security experience; or
◦ Two years of military (active duty, reserve, or national guard) honorable service; or
◦ Successful completion of a Police Officer’s Standard Training (POST) course; or
◦ Any reasonable combination of the above.
• If the applicant is in or has been in the military, applicant must provide a DD214 showing an honorable discharge.
• The Protective Security Officer (PSO) must be a US Citizen, be a minimum of 21 years of age, have a Social Security Card issued and approved by the Social Security Administration, have a Highschool Diploma or GED (GED must be from an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education), must be able to pass an initial and periodic medical and drug screenings, and must possess a valid driver’s license.
• Applicants must successfully complete the contract required training course which includes approximately 92 hours of instruction, a pistol qualification, and a DHS written exam (must score 80%).
• All PSOs are required to speak English fluently, read and comprehend written English, and compose coherent written reports in English.
• All PSOs are required to pass a government background check through the Department of Homeland Security. This background check is good for five (5) years.
• All PSO’s are required to qualify with their duty weapon every six (6) months. Each firearms qualification will have no more than two (2) attempts to qualify.
• All PSO’s must meet all local commissioning requirements.
• Physical demands:
◦ Frequent and prolonged walking, standing, and sitting up to 12 hours per day,
either indoors or outdoors, during daytime or nighttime. Outdoor posts may require the individual to withstand extreme heat, humidity, cold, and/or severe weather (e.g., snow, sleet, rain, hail, wind) for up to four hours without shelter. Many posts have no chair/seating available; thus, the individual must be able to stand for up to four (4) consecutive hours.
◦ Frequent contact with the general public, law enforcement, and dispatch center, requiring the ability to speak clearly and distinctly and remain calm in stressful situations (e.g., confrontations with angry, distraught, disturbed, or violent persons).
◦ Ability to remain on post up to four (4) consecutive hours without eating or relieving bladder/bowels.
◦ Ability to maintain a high degree of alertness for up to 12 hours, with the ability to react quickly mentally and physically to a variety of unexpected and dangerous situations.
◦ Use of senses (sight, hearing, smell, and touch) is necessary to discern unusual or dangerous situations.
◦ Ability to use post security equipment (metal detectors, X-ray machines, CCTV); ability to use handcuffs, baton, and firearm at any time while on duty
◦ Ability to read post assignments and respond to both routine and emergency dispatches/orders.
◦ Ability to subdue violent or potentially violent or disturbed individuals, or intervene in a crisis (e.g., provide emergency First Aid or resuscitation while waiting for the arrival of paramedics or other emergency personnel).
◦ Occasional running, sprinting, lifting heavy weights, moving heavy objects, climbing stairs, (e.g., responding to emergencies, ensuring timely and complete facility evacuations, giving pursuit, etc.).
