We are seeking a highly qualified HFE/HSI Subject Matter Expert with a PhD in Human Factors Engineering, Human Systems Integration, Organizational/Industrial Psychology, or a related discipline. The ideal candidate will have deep familiarity with U.S. Navy systems, processes, and operational environments. This role will focus on applying HSI principles to optimize the design, usability, and performance of advanced naval systems. This position is based in San Diego, CA, with occasional travel expected to Japan, Hawaii, and Washington State. Some shipboard access may be required.

The ideal candidate will have deep familiarity with U.S. Navy systems, processes, and operational environments. This role will focus on applying HSI principles to optimize the design, usability, and performance of advanced naval systems. This position is based in San Diego, CA, with occasional travel expected to Japan, Hawaii, and Washington State. Some shipboard access may be required.
Key Responsibilities:
- Apply HSI/HFE methodologies to enhance system usability, safety, and operational performance in complex naval environments.
- Evaluate and integrate human factors requirements into system hardware/software design and training programs.
- Conduct field observations, user interviews, and system assessments-including shipboard activities-to identify design or training improvements.
- Develop and deliver reports, presentations, and briefings summarizing findings and recommendations to senior stakeholders.
- Collaborate with engineering, training, and operational teams to implement human-centered design solutions.
- Conduct quantitative analysis and modeling to forecast human behavior, decision-making, or system interactions.
- Analyze and recommend improvements to training delivery methods based on operational human factors considerations.
- Ensure alignment with ISO standards for ergonomics and human-machine interface (HMI) design.
- PhD (or Master's with extensive experience) in Human Factors, Human Systems Integration, Organizational/Industrial Psychology, or related field.
- Deep knowledge of mental workload, decision-making, human reliability, team performance, and organizational processes.
- Proven expertise in the development and integration of user-interface technologies and autonomous/automated systems in defense contexts.
- Demonstrated experience working within Navy environments and familiarity with Navy operational culture and expectations.
- Strong communication and presentation skills, capable of working with Flag-level leadership and diverse stakeholders.
- Experience in the evaluation and design of control centers and process automation systems per ISO ergonomic standards.
- Ability to conduct end-user assessments and translate findings into actionable system or process recommendations.
- U.S. Citizenship and eligibility to obtain a Secret clearance are required.
- Secret clearance is required
- Experience supporting Navy Combat or Navigation System projects.
- Prior involvement with HSI on large defense acquisition or modernization programs.
- Certification in Human Factors or Ergonomics.
