Overview

Axient is seeking a fixed wing sUAS Drone Pilot with Design and Fabrication skills to join our team at The Dale Reed Subscale Flight research Lab at NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center on Edwards AFB in California.

Responsibilities would include integration, operation, and maintenance of a fleet of sUAS up to 330 lbs. Other duties include developing checklists and procedures, giving briefs and airworthiness approvals, and design and fabrication of parts and airframes. This is a fast-moving agile environment, and the ideal candidate should meet most of the qualifications below.

  • You will perform (small) unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) flight operations, flight operations support,
    and sUAS engineering technical (design/analysis/engineering) duties.
  • Piloting remotely controlled/unmanned aircraft.
  • Safety supporting flight ops of previous UAV, UAS or sUAS flight in laboratory and field conditions
  • fabricating, integrating, testing, and maintaining subscale unmanned aircraft
  • Operating various types of UAS via hand control station, ground station/cockpit and or buddy box configurations
  • Gas and turbine engine maintenance and operation


  • Must be a US citizen and eligible for a clearance
  • 8-10 years minimum
  • Bachelor of Science/engineering (BS)
  • Must be able to pass FAA 3 rd class medical requirements
  • Above average fixed wing drone piloting skills with Design and Fabrication exp.
  • Direct experience fabricating parts
  • Must have the ability to fly fixed wing aircraft without augmentation, (Non-Augmented experience)
  • DJI experience will not count. Must have fixed wing operate from a keyboard.
  • Heavy (50+ lbs.), fast (150+ mph), competition aerobatics, turbine etc.
  • Prior UAS experience integration, operation, and ground control desired
  • Composite construction, hollow molding, plug making, vacuum bagging etc.
  • CAD and solid modeling desired
  • Mechanical or Aero degree a plus
  • FAA Part 107 a plus

SALARY RANGE: Estimated $90,000 USD - $100,000 USD annually.
