Pay Range

$140,700 - $178,392 Annually for the SES.2 level

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An employee's position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.

Job Description

We have an opening for a Materials Engineer to perform research and development application activities in support of Laboratory missions. You will support R&D activities in Advanced Materials and Manufacturing, Materials Processing and Characterization. This position is in the Materials Engineering Division (MED), within the Engineering Directorate.

You Will
  • Work under limited direction from project leads to research and contribute to the development of photo-polymer materials for various applications.
  • Collaborate with other team members in the design, formulation, development, and characterization of moderately complex to complex novel polymer materials systems.
  • Conduct experiments utilizing well defined parameters to collect, analyze, and synthesize data supporting material development.
  • Work closely with engineers, scientists, and technicians, from LLNL and its collaborators in all aspects of experiment planning, execution, and data collection and analysis.
  • Contribute to project/program milestone completion to ensure project needs are addressed in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Document development activities, write reports, and deliver project briefings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Comprehensive knowledge in one or more of the following: photopolymer resin design, resin formulation, materials characterization techniques, and mechanical testing processes.
  • Experience with standard materials characterization methods for studying material optical, chemical, thermal and mechanical properties, including compressive and tensile testing, real-time and in-situ methods.
  • Experience with one or more of the following optically-driven 3D printing methods: stereolithography, digital light processing, two-photon polymerization, volumetric additive manufacturing.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
  • Experience working effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.

Desired Qualifications
  • Masters or PhD in Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.

Security Clearance
