Responsibilities
We are looking for a Machinist to join our team! The Machinist is responsible for the design, fabrication, and small-scale manufacturing of custom devices and systems to support operations in the field. We have a dedicated network of mechanical and electronic design workstations supporting various manufacturing and machine tools that require dedicated engineering services.
Our team is responsible for the electronic and mechanical fabrication, including the design, fabrication, testing and troubleshooting of electronic circuits and assemblies; assembly and modification of breadboard circuits; prototype assemblies; design, development, and manufacturing of concealments; printed circuit board fabrication; operation of multi-axis mills, lathes, and other machine tools; fabrication of custom metal, plastic and wooden components; machine tool maintenance; and design documentation.
- The machinist is responsible for the fabrication of unique components and assemblies in support of operational needs, encompassing long term to quick reaction projects, sometimes with minimal initial engineering design input
- Programs, sets up, and operates conventional, special purpose, and CNC machines to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts, and fits and assembles machined parts into complete units, applying knowledge of machine shop theory and procedures, shop mechanics, machinability of materials, and fabrication methods
- Consults with engineers and other personnel regarding product information, such as design, capacity and purpose, and types of material to be used to fabricate product
- Designs fixtures, tooling, and experimental parts to meet special engineering needs
- Sets up and operates metalworking machine tools, such as lathe, milling machine, or grinder to machine parts to specifications, and verifies conformance of parts to specifications, using precision measuring devices
- May operate welding equipment
- May develop specifications from a general description and draw a sketch of the part or product to be fabricated
- May confer with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems
- Sets up and operates machines on a trial run to verify the accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data
- Fits and assembles parts into complete assemblies, using jigs, fixtures, surface plates, surface tables, hand tools, and power tools
- May train workers in programming, set up, and operation of machine tools
- Uses computer aided design tools to assist engineers in the design, fabrication, and assembly of parts
- May operate additive manufacturing machines
- Some tasks may involve exposure to dust, metals, paints, solvents, and various other chemicals and environmental hazards frequently present in a manufacturing/laboratory environment
- May be required to travel outside to the Metro/DC area to gather first-hand information regarding requirements and operational methods
Requirements
- 5+ years of electronic and mechanical fabrication experience required
- Manual and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) lathes experience
- Manual and CNC milling machines experience
- Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) software experience (NX, Solidworks, AutoCAD, MasterCAM, etc.)
- TIG welding experience
- Water jet, laser, or plasma arc computer controlled cutters experience
- Sheet metal fabrication experience
- Must be able to lift at least 40 lbs
Education/Certification Requirements
- A completed apprenticeship in a manufacturing or prototyping field and a minimum of five years’ demonstrated experience in a manufacturing and/or prototyping environment is required or
-- An Associate’s degree and a minimum of five years’ demonstrated experience in a manufacturing and/or prototyping environment or
-- Recognized certification(s) in the manufacturing industry and a minimum of five years’ demonstrated experience in a manufacturing and/or prototyping environment
Clearance Requirements
- Applicants selected will be subject to a security investigation and may need to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information; an active Top Secret clearance is required
