The Alaka`ina Foundation Family of Companies (FOCs) has a Potential need for a Virology Immunology Lead Technical Support support our government customer located in Fort Detrick, Frederick, MD.

DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Serve as BSL-3 and/or BSL-4 mentor as needed.
  • CONUS/OCONUS travel may be required in support of approved studies and/or presentation of scientific research.
  • Prepare and participate in BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratory inspections conducted by Safety, Bio-surety, CDC, and/or the Department of Army Inspector General as required.
  • Support 1-3 Non-human Primate studies, 40-50 rodent studies per year. Shall coordinate all study activities with study personnel and required support divisions and prepare all required documents for execution of the studies. Shall perform inoculations with virus, collecting tissue for processing and conduct bleedings. Shall perform Complete Blood Count (CBC), general chemistries, coagulation assays and other clinical laboratory-based assays on samples from animals.
  • Perform basic cell culture, plaque assays (PA), plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT), PCR and other assays to support Non-human Primate and rodent studies. Shall be proficient at completing neutralization assay for a variety of viruses. Workload is approximately 650 plates/assays per month.
  • Perform in vitro testing of candidate vaccines and therapeutic compounds against a variety of viruses. May use 100-200 plates/assays per month.
  • Perform immunological procedures including enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and Western Blot assays. May perform 150 assays/month.
  • Proficient at completing flow cytometric analysis of cellular populations independently on multiple different flow cytometry machines in BSL-3 and BSL-4 laboratories. Shall perform approximately 100 tubes/samples per month.
  • Responsible for assessing and maintaining laboratory supplies in BSL-2, BSL-3 and BSL-4 laboratories. Shall assess supplies and ensure supplies are ordered or shall order supplies using GFEBS and/or DMLSS ordering system. Anticipated workload is 15-20 orders/monthly.
  • Provide a Research Technical Report NLT the last day of each week.
  • Responsible for the accountability, management, safeguard, and storage of BSAT, animal tissue samples, and working stock samples for the entirety of the FSAP-registered PI's inventory. Ensure current records are maintained and communicated to the FSAP-registered PI as required by FSAP regulations.
  • Perform technical literature searches and assist in the preparation of proposals, technical reports, and manuscripts for publication each year. May be required to present work at approximately one Scientific Meeting per year which may require CONUS or OCONUS travel.
  • Perform basic and specialized molecular biology techniques including but not limited to: PCR, qRT-PCR, DNA preparations and purification, cloning, transformations, fluorescence in-situ Hybridization (FISH), flow cytometry, IFAs, high content imaging, and other molecular biology techniques and other assays to support ongoing projects.
  • Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

REQUIRED DEGREE/EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:
  • Master's degree in Virology, Immunology, Biology, Molecular Biology or similarly relevant field.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Must have a minimum eight (8) years of laboratory related experience.
  • Must have two (2) to three (3) years' experience supporting Non-human Primate studies, and small animal studies to include but not limited to rodent studies
  • Must have three (3) to five (5) years' experience supporting coordination, development, preparation and execution of all study activities with study personnel and required support divisions and all required documents for the studies.
  • Must have two (2) to three (3) years' experience performing inoculations with virus, collecting tissue for processing and conduct bleedings, Complete Blood Count (CBC), general chemistries, coagulation assays and other clinical laboratory-based assays on samples from animals.
  • Must have three (3) to five (5) years' experience as supporting BSL-2, BSL-3, and BSL-4 laboratory inspections conducted by the Risk Management Office, Bio-surety, CDC, and/or the Department of Army Inspector General.
  • Must have of two (2) to three (3) years' experience performing basic cell culture, plaque assays (PA), plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT), PCR and other assays to support Non-human Primate and rodent studies.
  • Must have three (3) to five (5) years' experience with basic and specialized molecular biology techniques including but not limited to: PCR, qRT-PCR, DNA preparations and purification, cloning, transformations, fluorescence in-situ Hybridization (FISH), flow cytometry, Western blot, IFAs, high content imaging, plaque assays, PRNTs, and other molecular biology techniques and other assays to support ongoing projects.

REQUIRED CITIZENSHIP AND CLEARANCE:
  • U.S. Citizen
  • BPRP and CS-PRP enrollment required.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a valid U.S. Passport
  • Must pass NACI background check.
