Lead the development and experimental investigation of innovative concepts in gas and solid state lasers for illuminator applications. Develop and apply advanced hardware design methods, theories, and research techniques to the investigation and solution of complex and advanced technical problems. Plan, conduct, and technically direct projects or major phases of significant projects, coordinating the efforts of technical support personnel, drafters, technical writers, and electronics technicians in the performance of assigned projects. Conduct investigations and tests of considerable complexity. Review literature, patents, and current practices relevant to the solution of assigned projects.
-5+ years of experience with using computer models to predict the performance of various types of experimental laser and electro-optic (EO) system concepts
-Experience with designing, building, conducting, and analyzing the results of developmental laser experiments
-Knowledge of the theory and experimental implementation and use of laser or EO components and techniques, including laser resonators, fiber optics, efficient gain media excitation, supersonic mixing nozzles, chemically-resistant and high damage threshold optics, thermal management, vacuum systems, and pressure recovery
-Ability to design experiments to validate physics and engineering models of laser and electro-optic systems
-Ability to build and conduct laser or EO experiments employing existing, new, or modified equipment
-Ability to collect, analyze, and archive data to validate phenomenological and application models and improve, modify, or extend experiments
-MS degree in Physics or BS degree or 10+ years of experience with computer modeling in lieu of a degree
-Experience with developing computer models to predict the performance of various types of experimental laser and EO system concepts and civil and military applications of these systems
-Knowledge of the physics and operation of a variety of lasers, including fiber lasers, photonic crystal fiber lasers, diode pumped alkali lasers (DPALs), gas discharge lasers, noble gas lasers, and gas-filled hollow-core fiber Raman cells
-Knowledge of the operation and use of tracking illuminator lasers (TILLs) and beacon illuminator lasers (BILLs) and the physics of various illuminator laser options
-Ability to maintain laser or EO experiments, minimizing risks to laboratory personnel and equipment, and employ laboratory diagnostics, including calibrating the equipment, as needed
-PhD degree in Physics
-Completion of academic coursework in modeling laser phenomenon and performance, including gas lasers and in electro-optics
