Job Summary

AECOM – Technical Services is seeking a

Structural Supervising Discipline Engineer to be based in

Denver, CO or Richland, WA.

The Structural Supervising Discipline Engineer is responsible for managing the discipline engineering to meet customer and project requirements for scope, schedule, and budget. Provides a liaison between discipline engineers and Project Engineering Managers, Project Managers, Chief Discipline Engineers and Principal Engineers with respect to project scope, budget, scheduling, and overall engineering and design requirements and employee administration.

Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Coordinate the discipline's engineering activities with the activities of other disciplines.

  2. Maintain records, files and other documents pertaining to the discipline

  3. Assume responsibility for ensuring that engineering documents comply with applicable state laws/regulations, including affixing registered Professional Engineer seal when required

  4. Assign preparers and checkers for discipline calculations, engineering studies, specifications, and design drawings and coordinates review of external documents

  5. Establish schedules and budgets to meet project requirements and obtains approval

  6. Maintain technical coordination with the Principal Engineer to ensure adherence to industry codes, regulatory requirements and sound engineering practices

  7. Works toward achieving compatibility of customer’s and company’s objectives

  8. Coordinates engineering activities for a discipline with those of other disciplines on the project

  9. Prepares and submits periodic reports and forecasts on the status of the discipline

  10. Obtains professional licenses as requested and complies with state requirements for continuing education and license renewal

  11. Continually upgrade technical knowledge and capabilities and pursues additional coursework and training

  12. Advises the Project Engineering Manager regarding status of assignment(s) with respect to schedule, budgets, delays and adverse problems

  13. Work closely with Chief Discipline Engineers, Principal Engineers and Project Engineering Managers on employees evaluations and promotions and the overall technical improvement of the group

  14. Lead the development schedule and labor cost requirements for a project and can monitor the effect of these on the budget

  15. Lead all aspects of estimating for a discipline

  16. Responsible for project discipline performance management

  17. Provide assistance to projects to address technical issues related to process improvement

  18. Assist in training and mentoring/coaching other team members.

  19. Assist in the development of training programs within area of technical expertise and conducts training sessions as appropriate

  20. Create positive working relationships with peer leaders

  21. Create productive relationships with organizations both within and external to engineering

  22. Ensures the quality, quantity, and completeness of discipline deliverables and engineering tasks

  23. Perform all other position related duties as assigned or requested

Minimum Requirements

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree (or equivalent education) in an appropriate engineering discipline or the sciences from a four year accredited college or university

  • 7+ years of progressive professional experience in structural engineering.

Other Minimum Requirements


  • Washington State Structural Engineer (SE) license required.

  • In-depth knowledge of industry codes and standards, including AISC 360, ASCE 7, IBC, and ACI 318.

  • In-depth knowledge and expertise in STAAD.Pro modeling, analysis, design, and post processing.

  • In-depth knowledge and expertise in MathCad, Excel, and Word.

  • Ability and willingness to obtain a security clearance.

  • Due to the nature of work, US Citizenship is a must (dual Citizenship cannot be considered).

  • Master of Science degree in structural engineering.

  • Government or nuclear experience, i.e., DOD, DOE, NR.

  • Working knowledge of AISC Seismic Design Provisions, i.e., AISC 341.

  • Basic knowledge of nuclear facility design codes including ACI 349, AISC N690, ASCE 43, and DOE-STD-1020.

  • Working knowledge of seismic response spectrum analysis.

  • Working knowledge of ANSYS analysis software.

  • Fully understands the process of preparing and checking calculations, as well as, approval, revision, retention, and storage of project calculations.

  • Fully understands drawing production and checking, as well as, approval, revision, retention, and storage of engineering drawings.
