Job Description

Mission Technologies, a division of HII, is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Technical Writer and Editor to join our team, focusing on developing and maintaining comprehensive documentation for advanced defense systems, hardware, and software. The ideal candidate will translate complex technical information into clear, concise, and accurate content for diverse audiences, ensuring all documentation adheres to stringent military and government standards.

The position is located onsite at our Alexandria, VA facility.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Content Creation:
    • Develop, write, and revise a wide range of technical documentation, including system specifications, user manuals, operator guides, maintenance procedures, test plans, training materials, and proposal content.
    • Interface directly with engineers, subject matter experts (SMEs), program managers, and quality assurance teams to gather technical data and validate content accuracy.
    • Create and integrate technical illustrations, diagrams, and flowcharts to enhance document clarity.
  • Editing and Compliance:
    • Serve as the final editor for all internal and external technical documents, ensuring superior quality in terms of grammar, style, clarity, and consistency.
    • Ensure strict compliance with industry standards, including MIL-STD (Military Standards), government specifications, and company style guides.
    • Manage the document review and approval process, incorporating feedback from multiple stakeholders.
  • Documentation Management:
    • Organize and maintain a documentation library using a Document Management System (DMS) or version control software (e.g., SharePoint, Git).
    • Manage document version control and configuration management to ensure the correct and latest information is always available.
    • Assist in the development and maintenance of internal style guides and documentation templates.


Minimum Qualifications

  • 6 years relevant experience with Bachelors in related field; 4 years relevant experience with Masters in related field; or High School Diploma or equivalent and 10 years relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex engineering drawings, schematics, and technical specifications.
  • Proven experience in writing to and ensuring compliance with MIL-SPEC or other government standards.
  • Expert proficiency with documentation tools such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Familiarity with graphic design software (e.g., Adobe Illustrator) for basic editing of technical illustrations is a plus.
  • Must possess an active Top Secret (TS) clearance.


Preferred Requirements

  • Technical background in graphic design or manufacturing
  • Experience developing standard operating procedures (SOPs) and checklists
  • Experience with configuration management of procedures and documentation
  • Creativity to address non-standard problem sets
  • Ability to operate independently and at a fast-pace


Physical Requirements

Job performance will normally require only minor lifting and carrying of boxes of records or equipment.
