Do you want to play a key role in efforts by the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL) as we support the Government in the development and testing of strategic flight systems?

Are you seeking to collaborate with a team across multiple industry partners and Government stakeholders, to synthesize the work that APL does to support test activities?

We are seeking an experienced Engineer for the Ground and Flight Testing of the new and in-development strategic flight systems, to include the Sentinel Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM), the Trident II Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile, and various hypersonic strike systems, advising the programs on test strategy and test development.

As a Senior Flight and Ground Test Engineer, you will...
  • Take a lead role in the planning, execution, and analysis of Missile Flight and Ground Testing efforts for different programs, serving as a technical Subject Matter Expert (SME) for APL
  • Engage in regular travel to test sites such as Vandenberg Space Force Base (VSFB), Holloman, Promontory, Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC), and other Government and Prime/Sub Contractor facilities to provide guidance and technical inputs in meetings with Government Leadership and supporting Contractors
  • Observe Ground Test and Flight Test experimental progress and actual Testing events
  • Work closely with APL staff at Laurel to shape analysis and messaging on technical asks by Government Flight and Ground Test Teams
  • Expand your test experience and knowledge to support APL Sponsors, such as Strategic Systems Programs (SSP), Missile Defense Agency (MDA), and Space Agencies
  • Be forward looking to support new Test Capabilities to support emerging Sponsor needs
  • Write test planning documents such as Test and Evaluation Master Plans, Integrated Decision Support Keys, and assist with Mission Based Risk Assessments

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...
  • Have a Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering field with 5+ years of experience in conducting Ground and Flight Tests with Government Programs
  • Have strong comuter background and programming skills, including MATLAB
  • Have strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Have iniative, interest in skill development and the flexibility to accept assignents of varied scope and skill
  • Have a demonstrated ability to lead in a teaming-based environment
  • Have the ability to interact and communicate with multiple Staff levels of experience, with the ability to multi-task in a technical and fast paced environment
  • Are willing to travel regularly to Government and Contractor sites to attend meetings, support field tests, and other related activities
  • Are able to obtain the associated required Special Access Program (SAP) level access.
  • Hold an active Secret security clearance and can ultimately obtain a Top Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You exceed our minimum qualifications for the job if you...
  • Have a Master’s degree in an Engineering field
  • Have 10+ years of experience in conducting Ground and Flight Tests with Government Programs
  • Have Test and Evaluation leadership experiences in a variety of Test organizations
  • Have experience with writing and gaining approval for Test and Evaluation documents including Test plans, Test and Evaluation Master Plans, Mission Oriented Test Readiness Certifications, and other Test guiding documents
  • Experience with Mission Based Risk Assessments or Integrated Decision Support Keys
  • Experience with current Department of Defense facilities, Test organizations, and Test leadership
  • Experience with Government Acquisition programs
  • Hold an active TS/SCI level clearance

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development.
