Pay Range
$114,912 - $214,032 Annually

Job Description
We have an opening for a Senior Software Engineer. You will join the Strategic and Advanced Projects Office where you will prototype, design, and implement secure and scalable solutions that support IT services. Your responsibilities will include investigating and piloting new technologies, using it to implement new products or services that could support laboratory missions. Your work will play a critical role in enabling the laboratory to adopt modern technologies efficiently and securely. This position is in the Information Technology Solutions (ITS) Division within the Computing Directorate, in support of LivIT.
This position offers a hybrid schedule, blending in-person and virtual presence. You will have the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week.

You will
- Prototype and develop new technology solutions to address mission, operational needs, and support existing applications.
- Evaluate and pilot advanced IT services, including AI/ML infrastructure, to assess feasibility, scalability, and alignment with organizational objectives.
- Rapidly design, code, and test prototypes for emerging technologies-such as IoT systems, AI agents, edge devices, cloud services, and modern application architectures-while considering compatibility with existing systems.
- Design and implement scalable, secure architectures for new and existing applications and integrations, ensuring compliance with laboratory security and regulatory standards.
- Develop software to connect disparate systems, collect and transmit data over various protocols, support data storage across diverse platforms, and enhance existing solutions.
- Prepare technical reports and presentations to document findings, lessons learned, and recommendations from technology investigations and pilots.
- Stay current with technology trends; research, evaluate, and recommend new software, frameworks, platforms, and AI services to advance laboratory IT capabilities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Advanced experience designing, coding, and testing software solutions using modern programming languages (e.g., Python, JavaScript, C#, Java).
- Applied systems programming experience with developing and integrating software solutions that connect diverse systems, data stores, networking protocols, and IT platforms in an operationally efficient manner.
- Working knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and basic cloud-native development concepts.
- Understanding of secure software development practices and familiarity with security and compliance considerations.
- Ability to research and evaluate emerging technologies and incorporate findings into prototype solutions.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.
- Advanced written and verbal communication skills; ability to prepare technical documentation and present findings.
- Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams and adapt to rapidly evolving project requirements.
Qualifications We Desire
- Experience leading complex technical investigations, technology pilots, or end-to-end solution prototyping involving advanced IT, AI/ML, or IoT systems.
- Deep expertise in designing secure, scalable system architectures and deploying solutions into operational environments.
- Proven track record of successful technical mentorship or leadership within project teams.
