Duties

This is a career-ladder, developmental position where the incumbent may be promoted non-competitively to the full performance level and target grade of Maintenance Mechanic, NA-4749-10, PD MA12-025. Non-competitive promotion may occur upon meeting the following requirements: a) satisfactory demonstration of ability to perform at the higher grade level (b) assignment of increased responsibilities (c) recommendation for promotion by supervisor and (d) satisfactory completion of all required training, licenses, and developmental assignments.

Interprets construction and project renovation blueprints, prepares layouts and sketches, prepares purchase requests for tools, material and equipment needed to ensure. Work must be accurate and to specifications according to job requirements.

Performs work in at least two of the following trades in the maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings and related fixtures and utilities from initial layout to completion:

Plumbing: Installs, modifies and repairs new and existing utility, supply and disposal systems and equipment such as sewage, water, oil and gas distribution systems, water closets, tubs, fire sprinkler systems and showers. Works from building plans, blueprints and sketches.
Carpentry: Uses skilled techniques to construct, install, repair and modify wood and wood substitute structures and items requiring close tolerance fit and structural soundness. Assembles items using a variety of joining techniques and are skilled in the operation of general and precision carpentry and wood working equipment and are able to produce finished products with precise fits, accurate dimensions and acceptable appearance.
Painting: Performs special coating methods such as marbling and graining using coating materials prepared in special as well as common ways and by applying coating techniques that ensure surfaces have a smooth-textured and decorative appearance and meet thickness and level requirements.
Electrical: Installs, modifies, repairs, maintains, troubleshoots, tests and loads new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, associated fixtures, controls and equipment at a skilled journeyman level. Works from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and electrical maintenance and repair manuals to plan and lay out the routing, replacement, type, size, gauge, balance, load, continuity and safe operation of electrical lines and lighting, circuits, systems, equipment and controls.
Determines and places distribution panels, junction boxes, fittings and connections and installs wiring, couplings, conduit, relays, fixtures, transformers and other electrical devices. Plans and lays out work, tracing hard-to-locate defects or problems and completing repairs and installations with little or no technical advice using a wide variety of test equipment such as voltmeter, ammeter, wattmeter and ohmmeter.
Masonry: Rans and lays out work to be done for repair, alteration or construction of exterior and interior surfaces and structures built of brick, block, glass block, terra cotta, stone and various artificial and natural stone. Cuts and shapes materials used for constructing and repairing window and door openings and corners. Ensures courses are laid evenly and that completed work blends with existing brickwork.
Observes required safety, sanitation and hazardous waste disposal rules and regulations. Operates vehicle to transport tools and materials to work site.

Qualifications

A qualified candidate must possess:

A minimum two years documented general experience, with two years documented specialized experience in the applicable combination of trades noted herein sufficient to perform the duties of the position. Ability to read, write, and follow appropriate plans and specifications. Ability to communicate verbally and to perform all necessary math computations and measurements.
Plumbing Work: Knowledge of how various supply, disposal and utility systems and equipment are installed and operated. Knowledge to plan and lay out the installation and modification of vanous system and equipment; to interpret and apply building plane and blueprints; to use shop mathematics; and lay out such things as angles, arc and circles. Skill in the use of any of the accepted trade methods and techniques and in the use of tools and equipment.
Carpentry and Paint: Must be knowledgeable in shop mathematics and possess the skill to compute complex and exact projects with features such as arcs, tangents and circles. Must have the ability to read, interpret, and apply building plans, specifications, blueprints and sketches of all complexity. Must have the knowledge of the basic components of a structure and understand the purpose of the components as they relate to the complete structure so as to insure strength, support and fit of assemblies. Must be skilled in the use of a variety of hand and power shop tools of the carpentry trade to include set up and adjustment of tools to accomplish ail tasks. Must be knowledgeable of safety measures when using tools and must possess the skill to maintain the tools to include sharpening saws, tools, and accessories. Must have knowledge of standard surface preparation and coating methods and techniques. Must have skill in the use of such tools and equipment as scrapers, wire brushes, putty knives, sandpaper, paint brushes, rollers, spray guns, etc.
Performance of carpentry duties requires a thorough knowledge of wood and wood substitute materials and construction techniques. Must be able to produce finished products with precise fits, accurate dimensions and acceptable appearance. Must be able to use advanced shop mathematics to plan, compute and lay out complex and exact projects with features such as arcs, tangents and circles. Must have the ability to read, interpret and apply building plans, specifications, blueprints and sketches of all complexity. Must have the knowledge of the basic components of a structure and understand the purpose of the components as they relate to the complete structure so as to insure strength, support and fit of assemblies. Must be skilled in the use of a variety of general and precision carpentry equipment, to include set up and adjustment of tools to accomplish all tasks. Must be knowledgeable of safety measures when using tools and must possess the skill to maintain the tools to include sharpening saws, tools, and accessories.
Electrical Work: Knowledge of the makeup, operation, and installation of a variety of electrical systems, circuits, equipment, and controls. Knowledge of how various circuits, equipment, and controls operate fit and work together. Knowledge of the various gauges, sizes, and types of wire, conduit, couplings, fittings, relays, boxes, circuit breakers, and other electrical devices. Skill to plan, lay out, and complete the installation, modifications, and repair of various systems, circuits, equipment, and controls such as the routing, placement, balance, load, continuity, and proper and safe operation of circuits and controls, and wiring systems in buildings. Skill to interpret and apply building plans, blueprints, wiring diagram, and engineering drawings, and use formulas basic to the trade to figure such things as voltage and resistance. Skill in the use of hand tools and a wide variety of test equipment, for example, wire cutters and strippers, drills, soldering irons, screwdrivers, test meters, test lamps, Voltmeters, ammeters, watt meters, and ohmmeters.
Mason: Knowledge of the techniques and procedures of brick, block, and stonework. Has a basic knowledge of the techniques and procedures involved in laying brick, block, and stone in the construction and repair of walkways, veneer walls, and similarly uncomplicated structures. Has ability to use trowel. spirit levels, plumb bobs, air-hammers, and chisels in preparing work surfaces and accomplishing mason tasks. Knowledge of and ability to use the various hand and power tools associated with the occupation.
